Berner Oberland, Switzerland

Switzerland-Bernese Oberland-Lauterbrunnen- Wengen 2008 We I have been coming to the Berner Oberland since 1993, when my friend Tom and I visited the European continent for the first time. We had followed a young travel writer, Rick Steves, and his raves for this region. We stayed in Lauterbrunnern and after that first visit I was hooked. I have been back over 15 times over the years. I arrived in Wengen around 3:30 pm and took in the view from my balcony. The view of the 13,500 foot Jungfrau...

it was really nice there with some shops and restaurants. So we hop on the train and little do we know once we arrive...the town is pretty much closed! I think there was maybe 3 shops open and no restaurants what so ever!! Apparently November is a bad month to go anywhere in Switzerland, its the time ...

... the name). We were told it was really pretty up there and the shoppin was good... well they had one thing right... it was really pretty, but the shoppin was non existent... be that it was november and in between busy seasons everything was closed... but it was still fun to walk around and take some pictures!
We got back in the afternoon, we went and got some groceries and made a wicked stir-fry for dinner and had an early night ...

... mix need reviving. The weather was clear on the main view side and overcast on another. Evidently God didn't feel that the view and revolveing restaurant was good enough for us, so he threw in a couple of snow falls for good measure. Gotta love the guy!

We made a couple/few revolutions, took a few dozen pictures, and started our descent. We decided, at the encouraging of Rick Steves, to stop off at the tiny, and I mean TINY ...

Switzerland Day 4 World Cup Skiing

... trip. The top views are spectacular and an ice cave and museum await you at the top. Had a beer at K. Scheidegg and then down to Wengenalp for a look at the race. I only caught a couple of racers as they were finishing the downhill and then moving down mountain for the slalom event. A highlight of the day was the show put on by the Swiss Air Force "Blue Angels". Five red and white fighter jets swooped through the valley putting on a great show. One great ...

DO feed the bears!

We arrived in Bern late yesterday afternoon after a very short train trip. We had a little wander around before calling it an early night. Today was excellent. We did the Bern Audio Tour, which basically comprises of wandering around the Bern town for 5 hours with a video iPod to provide picture references, video clips and audio instructions. Very clever ...

Miscellaneous: Swiss Backpacker News - budget travel guide Every male over 20 years old must train in the army for 3 weeks each year with a 20% reduction in salary. There is no exception; even if you are helping your father out on the farm they will find a replacement. More beauty in the Alps

Our trip continued in the Alps on to Gimmelwald, Switzerland. It took us about 6.5 hours to get there and about 5 transfers to different trains, buses, and a lift to the town of Gimmelwald, but we made it. And believe me it was worth it. First of all the actual train ride is famously known as "The Golden Road". It looks like you are on a train through a Swiss Miss or Ricola commercial (rolling hills in the valley, small cow farms and ...

On July 20th I got out of bed at 7:30AM. For some reason the room was still spinning. I showered and layed out in the courtyard until noon. At 1:45PM Mike and I went rafting. It was a blast with cold white water continually pounding us. I was able to jump out of the boat in a calmer section and floated ...
