This morning we went through several locks on the Main-Danube Canal, which has 16 locks in total and which allows ships to now travel from Rotterdam to the Black Sea. Our stop today was in the medieval city of Regensburg, which suffered little damage during World War II and so is a wonderful example of 11th to 17th century architecture. We met our guide Helmut at about 10 a.m. and headed off with him along the river bank to the 12th century stone bridge which still serves pedestrian traffic.
