... to the ship.
5. I made it back to the ship with only moments to spare. I was the last to board and I was conscious that the captain waits for no one. Shortly after 8 we were sailing again and we could see the twinkling lights of Crete disappear as we dined by a window at the stern. Sandra had lamb and I had beef tournedo. Sumptuous. And relaxing as we looked forward to the next day at sea followed by our next destination: the tiny island of Malta.
... the bus (3 hour journey) to the town near where we were booked in for two nights. We arrived in the town, Chania, to discover there were no buses to anywhere near our hotel and we would have to catch a taxi. To complicate matters, Mark discovered that we had lost the credit card. Big Bugger. We managed to scrape together enough cash to pay for the taxi to our apartment / hotel room, which was LOVELY, but unfortunately in the MIDDLE OF NOWHERE! No cafes, no ...
Crete, Greece markandnoma2009Sunday was a rest day to recover from the very late night and the pressures of driving with the Cretans – a competitive sport with few rules. We wandered along the beach and poked round the shops, finding new treats, such as baklava, a honey and pastry dessert that Chris is addicted to. Like Elton John and cocaine, Chris can not go to sleep if he knows there are the remnants of any baklava left in the room. He was devastated to find ...
Chania, Crete, Greece kevino101... area and headed back in the opposite direction – when we got off the highway onto a rutted lane we asked where the old road was and eventually got onto it. Using our method of hugging the shoulder we managed to find the Leoniki Residence, which did not look much like the photos, but is pleasant enough. The desk clerk tried to sell us on the merits of buying half board – breakfast and dinner each day. But at €19.90 ...
Chania, Crete, Greece kevino101... I have been most excited about.
The Samaria Gorge is the longest natural gorge in Europe (9 miles, I think?) before ending at the ocean on the southern coast of Crete. It felt like longer than that, but perhaps that was because of the rocky terrain, which kept our eyes firmly on the ground as we descended from the top of the mountain to the level part of the gorge. The hike was absolutely gorgeous--gorges (we're hilarious...). Taking the 7:30am bus was ...
We ended up taking a bus to a town called Rethmynos to see this big old fortress with a mosque and a church within it, overlooking the water. It was interesting enough, but then we headed to the main part of town, which our "trusty" Lonely Planet had referred to as the second most charming city in Crete. I can only come to the conclusion that Crete is full of some **** cities. It was a weird ghost town full of ...

... to bandage our cuts, there'll be one. We'll have an endless supply of grandma's teaching us how to sew, enough brothers to play a soccer game, enough sisters to dance with all night, and aunts and uncles to pick us up when we're hitchhiking and cook us warm meals. And when we want to kiss, we'll have a dozen friends and boyfriends and girlfriends. When we age and die, we won't die knowing that one person has loved us all our lives. The whole village will have loved ...
