    ... I'm not sure the lady exactly knew how to use the machine, so I had to leave my items under her checkout and go find an ATM. This took longer than expected and when I got back up stairs she was just leaving! This meant I had to look rather dodgy and go under her desk to find my things, and then try to tell the other checkout man that the security tag had already been removed from the umbrella because I had already tried to buy it. ...

    Today we had our first culture class which was also the last class of the American students. It was very interesting as the guy had spent some time living in the U.S. so he said he was for democracy but that he thinks things are improving in China. We asked about the one child policy and he spoke openly about the effect it has had on society and the traditional family structure.     ... Grrrrr. The Chinese idea of appropriate and inappropriate social behavior is somewhat different to ours. E.g. in the Ford workplace, girls will often ask the men their opinion or rating of other girls or themselves. This would be sexual harassment in Oz.
