Not what was expected

You know those perfect white sandy beaches and crystal clear waters with excellent bonefishing opportunities every where you look? Well its not here. Caye Caulker is a laid back island swarming with Americans and therefore we think thats why its pretty expensive. From what we've seen so far Belize seems to be extremely third world in everything except the prices. Don't get us wrong, you can find those exquisite beaches and flats here, you just have to ...

San Pedro - Day 3

... I'm not sure I'd go quite that far, but once I've actually slept on one I'll be able to see just how their claim stands up. The afternoon was spent at Hol Chan/Shark Ray Alley with my new friend Kendall. I believe the company was Searious, and I wasn't quite as happy as I had been on previous trips with my usual guide, Tulu. Perhaps I'd gotten spoiled with Tulu, who would take a group of us out where we wanted, for however long we wanted, for cheaper than any ...

Belize - San Pedro & Caye Caulker

... stating 'so everyone else bugger off' and it would've summed up our experience!!

We did eventually find one machine which was willing to give us money so we went and celebrated with a beer.....a really expensive beer! As we wandered around looking for somewhere to have dinner we realised that everything on San Pedro is really expensive - it is the playground for rich Americans so the locals take advantage!! I'm not entirely sure ...

In the middle of the ocean

... The biggest things we saw was a manatee, (aptly called a sea cow because it is vegetarian and looks like a cow). It´s a pretty amazing animal that looks like it would be awkward in the water, but swims gracefully despite its size. After a brief stop on the bigger Ambergris Caye, we returned home drained, salted and exhilerated. More to follow, but for now I have a date with a live volcano (yes that´s for real!) Thanks for reading!

Day 10 - by Sophie

... wasn't until this afternoon we realized we were being so stupid. Finally when the replacement boat arrived we all piled our luggage and ourselves into the tiny boat and set out. The waves were REDICULOUSLY choppy. We sped through Caribbean ocean on a metal dingy, with no life jackets, in waves as big as the boat. hahaha. Great adventure, right? Yeah. But we can only say that because no one died. (Thank ...

Belize - Caye Caulker

... As an extra bonus, the mode of transportation was on a pretty sweet sailboat that took us to three different reef locations. The first location was just to get our feet wet, so to speak, and we weren´t really expected to see much. I got really lucky and had a *huge* Eagle Ray swim right in front of me just before I got back on the boat. Its wing span was easily as wide as my arms stretched out, and it tail was longer than my ...

Belizean Dreams

I took a walk on the beach to the north this morning. Saw folks voting at the high school. Looks like a pretty good turnout. Of course, no alcohol will be served today until the polls close. Damn politics! We had breakfast at Blue Water Grill - cinnamon French toast and a Belizean breakfast with coffee and tea for less than $20 total. We've found prices to be pretty comparable with American prices. Now we're about to get on board for a snorkeling tour of Hol Chan Marine Reserve ...

Through rain, sleet, snow or gloom of night

... where the anchor was kept. This meant that every single time we stopped anywhere, every single backpack had to be taken out, moved, and restowed. (I started counting, as the cargo hold opened directly into my knees and pinned me to the seat with the sharp anchor points centimeters from my feet). (Beginning of trip stowage debacle: 1) We could tell almost from the minute we pulled away from the dock that this was going to be a rough ride. We were all pretty much just wearing swimsuits ...

Where M hugs a shark and T is scared (AND admits)

... stick out my hand to touch her snout. I am crazy but not that crazy! Getting off the boat, I hear a guy saying: 'bye, pretty boy' to my hubby! I ask him who that was. 'The gay boy' he says, hiding behind me. The macho Tomcat scared!!! Afterwards, I am happy to decide to stop diving here, take a 'break' tomorrow and leave the island the day after. For the first time, we went to buy 'stuff, check it out: Ralph Lauren (!) shorts for Dr T. He only has one pair ...

Can't move

I'm still here in San Pedro. I don't want to leave. I'm spoiled. Two nights in a row I've had people cook for me. Tonight I'm cooking for them. After they leave, I'm going to a private party at Jaguar's down the street. Tomorrow I was thinking of going snorkeling or parasailing and then maybe leaving Sunday morning for Placencia. I don't know what I'm going to do. Right now....I'm just chillin' out.
