Yesterday we drove from Te Anau to Milford Sound and it was an amazing 120km of lakes and mountains. The weather was dry but in a lot of places the clouds hovered below the tops of the mountains, creating a view which we have never seen anywhere else in the world. It was one of those days that we shall never forget. We checked into our room at the Milford Lodge and later in the day we took the lodge courtesy bus to the harbour from where we had booked a 2 hour Mitre Peak cruise of the sound. ...
Milford Sound, New Zealand alanandchrisAs soon as we arrived in Te Anau, a pretty little, touristy village, situated on the banks of Lake Te Anau, we booked in for the Glow-worm cave tour. A couple of hours later we were being whisked across the water to the Te-Ana-Au caves (which gave the lake its name). After a short video presentation about the life of a glow-worm, we were split into small groups to investigate the caves. Via a network of walkways and small boat journeys we were guided deeper into the depths of the impressive c...
Te Anau, New Zealand andanddan28 March There is a constant struggle while traveling between current enjoyment and future planning. Upon arrival in any place, it is my natural inclination to start exploring the new town and just enjoy being there. However, in the back of my mind is knowledge of the fact that in just a couple of days I'll have to be moving on and in order to move to the next place successfully it is necessary to arrange both transport to and accommodation at my next destination. For example, if I just sh...
Milford Sound, South Island, New Zealand benjamin.scheppFiordland, Milford Sound, Key Summit and rain. 20 Feb The road to Milford Sound, though only 120 km, takes you through a lot of scenery. The route from Te Anau to Milford Sound has evocative sounding names along the way like 'The Divide', 'Mirror Lakes','The Chasm' and 'Homer Tunnel'. Anyway it was raining, but as it was due to rain even harder over the next 2 days we decided to go for it. We parked the van at 'The Divide' and walked up to Key Summit at 917 metres, only 400 metres above the c...

So the top sightseeing destination in New Zealand is the Milford
Sound. It is listed twice as a UN World Heritage site for its
cultural as well as geographic significance. After taking our time
driving and doing a bit of hiking through it, we both understand why
-- we agree that Milford Sound and the surrounding Fiordland National
Park is one of the most beautiful places we have ever seen! And it
was a GORGEOUS day! As you can tell by our blogs – weather is a BIG
On the 4th we drove to Milford Sound. A beautiful scenic drive. We stayed at Milford lodge backpackers, the only hostel in Milford! Location of the hostel was great, right by a river, surrounded by mountains. We took at cruise out onto the sound to view the fjords & scenery & also saw some fur seals. Got lots of pics.
Milford Sound, New Zealand danlucyWalking weary, I left Picton and headed down to Christchurch just for a night before making my way to Arrowtown, a small picturesque settlement just outside Queenstown to meet Tom, the hairy Scot who Emma and I did some travelling with last time we were in NZ. We couldn't have asked for better weather and spent a couple of days attempting a couple of walks and drinking plenty of red wine! On returning to Queenstown we hired Percy (so named by the Scottish Yeti .... see piccies for confirmatio...
Otago and Fiordlands, New Zealand dinosaurheadIt's a nice foresty two hour drive from Te Anau to Milford. We looked for places to camp along the way that would offer fishing and a fire pit but we didn't find anything. We did stop at one lake and fished for trout. I made a fire with some difficulty since it had been raining but eventually the rain and cold was too much and we were glad we didn't pitch our tent and moved on to Milford. Entering Milford is amazing. As you get close you start to see waterfalls, then you drive through a tunne...
