Historical Traveler Reviews of Milford Plaza New York City
Great location, nothing much else.

Stayed at the Milford Plaza for 7 nights on our second visit to NYC in early March 2003. It was, well, quite an experience. The woman at the check in counter was unpleasant at best, and just plain rude at worst. We had requested for a corner room (after hearing so much about it) a few weeks earlier via email, but they have no record of it whatsoever. We persisted and she said that a corner room will be available over the weekend and we can move in. The first room we got was on the 27th floor (if I remember correctly), the lone window opened up to a view of the room opposite. Also, it was beside the ice machine, which has got these periodic loud buzzing sounds. My main grouse was with their plumbing. The water temperature and pressure were erratic. It can be a nice comfortable warm temperature one moment and become icy cold and/or boiling hot the next. The tap above the sink 'explodes' periodically (you'd know what I mean when you experience it) and the water flow down the sink is excruciatingly SLOW. We did switch to a corner room on the 14th floor on Sunday morning after repeated calls to the front desk. The new room was noticeably more spacious, had two windows (one with a view of the room opposite and one with a view of the Marriot Marquis and parts of Times Square). But the plumbing problems remain - erratic water temperature and pressure. The room came with TV (with 40 over channels), Queen bed, walk-in wardrobe (sort of), hairdryer and a bathtub. My companion and I may be over-reacting but we felt a little uneasy when we moved into the new room. The hallways were rather spooky (it is a very old hotel), and because it's a corner room, we had to walk a rather long way from the elevators. It didn't help that my companion woke up the next morning with a horrifying nightmare of seeing some woman appearing in a photograph and the fact that we found a $1 bill under the mattress and a pair of men's underwear under the bed. (Bad housekeeping?)But then again, as I mentioned, we could simply be over-reacting. The rest of our stay there past without any incident. The hotel is, overall, a great value for the location. It is one block from Times Square, the subway is literally a stone's throw away and plenty of cabs along 8th Ave. It is also within walking distance from Restaurant Row on W 46 St, all the theatres on Broadway and the Port Authority Bus Terminal. There's a theatre desk with a very helpful and knowledgable staff (even though she didn't have any tickets within our budget) and 2 ATMs in the ground floor lobby. It will definitely be on my list of hotels to stay the next time I'm in NYC, but not after I've exhausted all the other hotels within my budget.
Ok rooms, bad service...

I stayed at the Milford Plaza for eight days in May 2002. I luckily was placed in a "corner" room, which meant that my room (from what I've read) was significantly larger than the typical rooms in the Milford. For the price, I was happy with the room, amenities, and view (sixth floor, great view of 8th Ave & 45th Street). A few things puzzled me, however. One night I put out the "Do Not Disturb" sign and a housekeeper still insisted on knocking and coming into my room to clean while I was there. The next day I was going out early so I put out the "Please Clean Room Now" sign. Don't you know, it didn't get cleaned until I finally searched out a housekeeper well after the time they'd normally finished my floor, and she told me that for her to clean the room, I'd have to leave. The major problem I had was this: The plug on the built-in hair dryer in the bathroom was loose, and as I went to push the plug into the electrical outlet, it BROKE into pieces and I was electrocuted. Not just a simple spark of static, but a solid shock. I wasn't greatly injured, but quite shaken and upset. Upon inspection, I saw that the hair dryer plug had been broken and GLUED back together at an earlier time. I called the manager and demanded that the hair dryer be replaced immediately and told her that for experiencing a shock due to their negligience I felt I should be compensated with one free night, or whatever they saw fit. She said that since I paid in advance, no refund would be issued but she'd send someone up to deal with the problem. She was not as apologetic as you'd expect in this situation. FOUR HOURS later a repairman with a bad attitude came up, removed the built-in hair dryer from the wall, said not a single word, left with it, and during the last 5 days of my stay, both he and the manager were never heard from again, nor was the hair dryer ever replaced. Would I stay there again? If they'd guarantee the room I'd want (one of the large corner rooms), I would, simply because it's a nice room for the price. (I paid $120 nightly with tax.) But beware of room 608. If you get that room, stay away from the hair dryer!!On a side note, once while staying at the Marriot Marquis, I pinched my finger in a table leaf in one of their restaurants. Upon seeing my injury, they immediately brought someone up from the hotel's medical center to inspect and bandage my injury. I didn't request this, the restaurant manager kindly insisted upon it. Three weeks later I received an official letter of apology letting me know if there was anything they could do, to let them know. Of course in my eyes, simply sending the letter was more than enough. THAT is service. It's definitely true what they say; you get what you pay for.
Milford Plaza, a pleasant surprise

We recently spent three nights in NYC at the Milford Plaza near Times Square. I was pleasantly surprised. While the front desk service was slower than I had hoped, the serice was courteous and friendly. I had mention we were there for a special occassion before our arrival and we were given an upgraded room. The room was very clean and maid service was good. I would recommend this hotel to anyone who isn't looking to sink a ton of money on a hotel, but, still wants the location. If you are looking to buy theatre tickets, don't use their desk. Buy your tickets online before you arrive in the city.
Never Again

Where to begin??? Was it the horribly slow, inefficent and RUDE checkin.... the resturaunt with posted hours till' 12 am that mysteriously closed at 9pm nightly... the 'maid-service' that forgets to make beds, replace dirty towels, clean. To top it off, when asked for towels we were treated with distatin and a frown. Service at this hotel is SHABBY, SHAMEFUL and just plain CRAPPY. I pray that no one lives through this hell that is called the Milford Plaza, otherwise known as 'The Rat Trap.' I highly recommend staying at the new Westin in Times Square or otherwise, as this property is outdated, overpriced, not well trained and just plain dirty. Oh, and one other thing... Don't use their Theatre Tickets counter. Their help doesn't follow through with promises and are totally unknowlegable about thetare in the area. NOT WORTH THE MONEY OR AGGRIVAION.CKK
Quiet, clean hotel

I stayed at the Milford Plaza Hotel for 2 nights, January 27 & 28, 2003. The location was great to get around (42nd and 8th). In the heart of the theatre district. The hotel is only a couple blocks from Times Square. I wanted to explore and took the nearby subway everywhere.
The front desk staff was friendly and the concierge recommended a delicious sushi restaurant in the East Village (took the subway).
My room with a queen size bed was small, however it was clean and quiet.
I was on the 14th floor and the vending machine and ice machine were in separate locations on the 14th floor.
I received my wake-up calls on time every morning.
The down side for my visit was the TV didn't have good reception, their was no coffee maker in the room and their was no ironing board or irons in my room.
For the price, location and friendly staff I would stay here again. It is not a four or five star hotel, however it is a good value.
I hadn't been to New York in years and everyone was very helpful and friendly.
Not what I expected!!!

It was very smelly and the walls are paper thin! It looked very dirty and there was a moving barn outside the window and there was also a sign that said "Unrine Town!" One good thing is that the hotel was really close to Times Square and all the theatres on broadway!
What a DUMP
from A TripAdvisor Member
This is a DUMP.
I travel for a living and would not force this place on my enemy.
The rooms are so small that you have to walk sideways between the worn out beds to get between the wall and the rest of the cube that is alloted to you.
The staff is rude (yes I know new yorkers are rude) but when you are paying them....not acceptable.
As I stated I tgravel extensively and this is not the worst place I have stayed but close, I believe the Hanoi Hilton was the worst.
Don't go.

The Milford Plaza.
Reasonably priced, with some great views from the higher floors. Cable TV does the job, the staff
are helpful (we were upgraded at no extra cost) and it is just about on the edge of Times Square. There is very little noise, though as soon as you leave the hotel and turn left, the theatre district is on the doorstep. This hotel is reasonable, relaxing, and helped me realise that New York is possibly the finest place in the world. The Milford staff even escorted us to the best theatre on Broadway !! - Excellent.
