Day 115 We were now heading to Onomichi, the starting point for a cycle ride across six islands that we had decided to do. Along the way on the train it passed through Saijo, a famous sake brewing area so we had to stop. Unluckily for us, several were closed due to Golden Week (getting to hate those words!) but four were still open, so we set off walking with a map. The Rough Guide had recommended some ruins as the best place to view the bay and get your bearings - after 4 wrong turns we finally found "the place" - which turned out to be 4 stray cats, a cemetery and a lot of stairs. The views were obstructed by buildings all around. We then searched for "the whisper bridge" again to no avail, but we did manage to taste the medicinal ...
WE DID: - caught the train from Okayama to Fukuyama and dumped our bags at the hotel, a 5 min walk from the station - caught a train to Onomichi, wandered along the dock and caught the ferry (after deciphering the kanji) to Ikuchi-jima - a kind man led us to the bike hire and we hired some electric bikes and cycled part way round the island, before stopping off at a restaurant on the beach for lunch - Kosanji : our favourite temple so ...
