To Tofino....

Well, we are finally back in town from our trip across the water. Diane and I enjoyed our trek over land and water and the guys had an epic day in the air. We hooked up around 6:30 PM outside of Tofino, in time for a beach walk, nap and dinner at the Wickannish Inn. Our spontaneity was rewarded with an awesome find in our overnite stay at Middle Beach Lodge. See the pictures....Highly recommend this to any future Vancouver Island visitors. In the AM the Prindles set out for a kayaking tour an...

Tofino part 1

Arrived in Tofino yesterday after a 6 hour bus journey! The scenery was absolutely breathtaking. The journey was a little hairy towards the end. Hurtling towards a blind corner of a cliff at 60km/h is somewhat scary!

Tofino reminds me of Findhorn loads o hippys and everywhere is so eco friendly. We can understand though If we had the scenery that these people wake up to every morning then we would want to conserve it too. There isn't much to do in Tof...

The wild and beautiful Pacific Rim National park

We left Vancouver travelled by ferry and then drove 200 km drive through dense evergreen forests and over snow capped mountains to reach the Tofino, in the Pacific Rim National Park. The ferry ride from Horseshoe bay to Nanaimo was in dense fog so we had glimpses of the coastline accompanied by the booming fog horn as we crossed the sea.It was great to be out of the city and heading out into the wilderness. The roads were quite and clear and once on the island the 200k to Tofino only took 3 h...

A Canadian Gem -- Tofino

We had a great drive on highway 4, which basically cuts through Vancouver Island. The weather was overcast and cool. The sky did not look that inviting so driving through the Alberni Valley was probably the best thing we could have done with our time. We hit the split in the road just before noon and dropped into the visitor center and managed to get a room in Tofino for one night... high season.... Anyway, we had some time to kill before we could get into our room, so went to downtown Tofino...

Historical Traveler Reviews of Middle Beach Lodge Tofino

Such a peaceful place

from cbird
We stayed here for two nights in July 2004. We stayed in a cabin with a bedroom, a loft room and a sofa bed in the lounge. As there were five adults this was rather a squash but no larger unit was available and we were made aware that space would be restricted. In fact we coped very well as the cabins are well designed. The staff were wonderful, helpful and friendly. The included breakfast of home baked goods was delicious. Housekeeping failed to clean one day and this was done immediately and a bottle of wine delivered by way of an apology. Will definately go back.

Good for the price

from FlashScuba8
We just returned from a week in Tofino. It is a beautiful and remote fishing village, with some of the most exquisite scenery and climate imaginable. We want to return and enjoy a winter storm watch vacation when we can. We stayed at Middle Beach Lodge, mostly based on the recommendations of this website, trip advisor.com. The price was very affordable ($150 CAN) for a beachfront room. While their website, as well as this one, described it as rustic, homey and with smaller rooms, the accolades overwhelmed those descriptions. I wish I had read between the lines. We had a room with a queen size bed, with approximately 3 feet on every side of the bed (including the foot), no closet (clothes were hung on pegs on the wall) and the sink was in the bedroom, taking up more precious space. My boyfriend and I would have to twirl around each other if we were both moving about the room. There was no space at all for opening a suitcase except on top of the bed. Yes, it was very clean, and yes they were very nice, but if I had known just how small the room truly would be, I would have chosen another place. We visited the Wickaninnish (absolutely gorgeous, we tried to move to that place and they were booked) and the Long Beach Inn (another beautiful spot, though with fewer ocean facing rooms). The food at MiddleBeach for dinner is average, typical of a diner. There are much better restaurants in town, especially the Schooner.

If it is your goal to have a quiet vacation, being able to listen to the ocean (be sure to bring your own mosquito net, there are no screens on the windows and we were attacked at night by huge mosquitos. We went to the hardware store and bought a net and put it up ourselves with duct tape) and read books on the beautiful beach at an affordable price, then please, choose Middle Beach Lodge. If you need more comfort in your surroundings, I suggest another lodge. Either way, you will definitely love Tofino!

It's unanimous, this place is wonderful

I had found the Middle Beach Lodge on the web when i first started planning a trip to Vancouver Island a couple of years ago. Their website is very helpful in showing the rooms and rates. I highly recommend you check it out.

But you will be very pleasantly surprised by the Lodge when you get there in person. The setting is so beautiful and natural. The cabins have a "lodge" feel without being uncomfortably rustic. Everything is simple and tasteful.

The main lodge area and restaurant are wonderful. The breakfast was fantastic. We had dinner there one night as well and that is a very good deal and very good food (but don't miss the great restaurants in Tofino!!!).

I'm looking forward to going back. I envy you folks on the west coast who can get there more easily. if i was closer, i would go every year. And Tofino is a great place to visit.

Outstanding!!!!

Tofino is a must

My wife and I got engaged on the beach just down from the Middle Beach accomodations. Very nice folks that work there along with some of the best views ever made this one of our favorite trips. If you want serious R&R, bring a few books to read and enjoy the atmosphere to its fullest.

What a place

We have just spent 2 night at the middle beach lodge and as a travel manager I almost cound not fault it we stayed in a "single cabin" which had two single beds "upstairs" and was comfortable for 4 adults.

Although people have commented on the cost of the fixed menu - I would say it was superb expecially as you could go back for 2nd's let alone 3rd's!!!! It was so good. The staff where excellent and the sunsets sensational. The Whale watching package is very good value.

Loved It!

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed here for 3 nights & didn't want to leave. We loved the setting, the fresh baked goodies in the morning & evening. Our room was small & simple but very nicely done. It was in the adult-only lodge & had a balcony facing the ocean. We left the door oepn at night so we could hear the ocean. This was exactly wwhat we were looking for...

something peaceful & beautiful. Can't wait to go back.

Class without the pretense

Like most of you now I also did a lot of online searching for that perfect romantic getaway. I can say that out of the three choices1.

Wikaninish Inn 2. Middle Beach Lodge 3. Long Beach Lodge I am sure we made the best choice. We just arrived home from our 2 night, 3 day stay at Middle Beach Lodge and it was even more than we expected it to be.

We sayed in room 26 which is called the Honeymoon suite. We weren't on our Honeymoon but wanted 'the best' room in the place... The room was totally private and had wonderful ocean views from both balconies.

Beside the bed is a wonderful big window which we kept open at night to listen to the waves. We were on the second level so there was no foot traffic or noise at all. The bathroom had beautiful tile a soaker tub big enough for 2 and then some! There are no phones or tv's in the room and no room service. They don't come and wake you up to clean the room like some big places do. If you want new towels and sheets you just request them and they will do it. Breakfast is included in the price of the room and is seved unitil 10 am. The breakfast was the only thing that let us down. They say you get a Continental Breakfast which we assumed would be eggs, toast, cofee something like that but it was only bread, muffins, croissants and cereal...We didn't eat at the restaurant because we found it a bit pricey plus we wanted to head into town and exlore some of the places along the water. The Middle Beach restaurant was a set meal ( 1 course for $30 dollars) There is a beautiful, cozy living room / lobby at the lodge which was always full of people reading by the fire or talking, playing cards etc. They serve the best chocolat chip cookies I have ever tasted and have fresh coffee and tea anytime of day or night. All in all for the price it was It was well worth it and we would go back in a heart beat. I had to go check out the two other places we considered before we left ...just to see...and I can say that the beaches aren't as nice and the feeling was a bit too 'big' too stuffy. Middle Beach Lodge is a very cozy, intimate place with 5 star luxury.

Spectacular location

from A TripAdvisor Member
The kind of place they use for a photo shoot. When the weather is good this is a spectacular place - however those days are infrequent.

Northern Pacific coast days are often cloudy, windy and it even rains.

There are slickers and boots at the door of the reception lodge (Hint) However, if you like storms with a fire this is a wonderful place. Food is excellent - lodge style - good staff. Not easy to reach but it is worth the energy. Check the weather forcasts. Reservations a must - sold out for months during high season - June - August

Worth the effort to get there!

My wife and I went here for our honeymoon, and it is truly a great spot. We stayed in the adult only lodge, and I understand the headlands lodge and cabins have more amenities, so this review mainly applies only to the adult lodge. The adult lodge has no telephone or TV in the rooms (there is a TV room and a pay telephone in the laundry room), which is just what we wanted. Its remote, and you can here and see the ocean and the mists rolling in each night/day. The rooms are small but very cozy and comfortable. (The honeymoon suite is a bit larger w/ a kitchenette). You walk through a coastal rainforest trail to get to the isolated beach. (Middle beach is isolated, Mackenzie beach is larger and shared by two other hotels and a campground--Middle beach lodge is on a point between them and has access to both).

If you are looking for a remote romantic getaway with not too many amenities that still has a luxurious feeling about it, this is the place.

The free breakfast in the large, rustic common room is awesome--fresh cinammon rolls, croissants, and bread and muffins, plus coffee and juice. They make cookies at night. Call them about their dinners too--you should reserve them--they are a flat rate and everyone gets the same thing--very good (We had a crab one and a prawn one).

While you are in Tofino, make sure you do some whale watching and go on a few hikes in the park--it really makes the experience.
