We read about the vibrant downtown area of El Paso and a section near the two bridges used for the border crossing called the Golden Horseshoe. Thought, hmmm, sounds like a good adventure and a chance to get the flavor of Tex/Mex culture.

So we drove down thinking we would get some good deals in this area because this is where the residents of Juarez come across to shop for deals in the US and Americans ...

... to El Paso, no radio (no we don't have satellite radio) and often times no cell connection. We had to plan our gas stops carefully as there were not too many places available along the way. ... impossible to find a decent place to have dinner (unless you're willing to spend $30 for a main course in the only - inexplicably swanky - restaurant still open). Aside from a couple of dive bars a few blocks away, wafting out the suicide-inducingly awful sounds of cheesy Mexican pop at seemingly all hours of the day, El Paso's nightlife is on a par with somewhere like Riyadh, without the public amputations that make a wild night out in the latter ...
