... it for a while as you sit with good company and enjoy the entire experience. Just very different.

Another favorite memory of mine from Italy, that illustrates this different perception of how food should be enjoyed, was the restaurant we went to for lunch in Manorola. It was peak time for lunch, and there was a decent wait outside. We were there for at least an hour and a half, and Meg was in the bathroom when he brought us our after-dinner drinks. I felt ...

... take this very seriously, at least at many of the places we ate, because the food was so fresh. I've learned that ingredients make all the difference in a great meal and a mediocre one. This makes me even more excited about the CSA we joined for the summer - we'll be forced to cook with the produce that is seasonal, and use fresh, local vegetables in our meals.

Seriously, while planning for this trip, I've become so grateful for technology. From using Google Drive to edit documents and make them available offline to downloading apps that allow me to "star" main attractions and restaurants in cities, I am in awe of how much is available.

I've downloaded all of the TripAdvisor offline itineraries for Rome/Florence/Venice. I've downloaded CityMaps2Go ...

... I was so proud of myself for creating this beautiful, expandable folder with slots for each destination. I printed off train ticket confirmations and hotel addresses and contacts. And then I realized... I really don't need it. And it takes up a TON of space. Instead, I've made all of the documents available offline in Google Drive and I'll access them from my phone.

There are a few maps that we'll be using - I'll just pack those in my hiking bag ...

    The packing challenge

Over the weekend we started the challenging job of packing for our 3 week vacation in multiple climates. Add to that the airline restrictions and it becomes a major puzzle. To play it safe we are taking 3 checked bags. Never done that before. Fortunately the airline allows us each 2 bags so we are good to go.

We're just about done however and we are ready (and excited) to go. Tomorrow ...
