Just arrived in Singapore after a 6 hr flight from Cairns. It's nice and hot, suppose it's just gonna be like that from now on - great! We'd had qualms about staying at the YMCA, well, we've all seen the video, done the dance, but when we pulled up outside this flashy looking hotel I asked the English couple was this their hotel, lucky things, but then the driver shouted "Metropolitan YMCA" - couldn't believe it! It's gorgeous, has a swimming pool, gym, en-suite rooms, TV, tea and coffee maki...

Singa, Singapore christinaukYesterday we left the YMCA hostel and headed east towards the airport on the MRT (Mass Rapid Transportation - known as the train to the rest of us) which is the cleanest, cheapest, most efficient public transport system I think I'll ever use. Plus it has air conditioning as standard on all trains so very tempting to not get off at all. We left the German guy we were sharing a room with in the YMCA hostel exactly where we found him - in his bed. In fact the first two nights we were staying the...
Singapore, Singapore fiveaces Welcome to the sanitised city. Everything clean, everything orderly... come to think of it... everything in English. A fantastically easy start to SE Asia so far, since everything feels very safe and domesticated... I'm escaping the midday heat and sweaty-betty humidity for a little while by writing this.
Here's a few lessons I've learned so far:
Lesson number 1: Always pack toothpaste and a toothbrush on a long haul flight… you'll have to trust me. But after flying across con...
After a four hour bus journey from Mersing (Malaysia), we arrive in Singapore. We are dropped off at the main bus station and from there take the highly efficient MRT (underground/overground train) service to Orchard Road - to the hostel where we are staying. The cost of living in Singapore is on a par with London which totally blows our budget. Accomodation is very expensive here and for the price of a nights accomodation in a 5 star boutique resort in Thailand or Vietnam, we are staying at ...

... I risk rendering my soul bleak and miserable. It's difficult to imagine that someone travels around the world for living will be this unleavened, tough and dry. If traveling will transform humans into dried up dough, what then is the meaning of travelling in the first place.

The body is active but the soul still and starts to regenerate and drift away. Singapore, Singapore andrea_legendSecond night on Phi Phi we decided it was time we actually went out! We went to some random bars including a roof top one and then metsome friends from home at a beach bar where we danced till 4am on the sand and drinking buckets of who knows what! Day 3 hungover we were relieved to see some rain as it meant we could sleep!! Managed to find some good comfort food in the evening and the Ashes on tv, sadly we went to bed just 2 hours before we won!! Day 4 we went on a trip to ...

Jesus, stick some strings on my arms and legs and be done with it, puppetmaster.

The whole experience left me fascinated by how tight ***** the authorities are in Singapore, and so I set myself a project to find the most 'banned’ signs I could on a ten minute journey downtown. Singapore, Singapore chloeb... NZ, Indian, Dutch and Malay troops were killed or imprisoned. Thousand of Chinese were targeted for torture and mass execution. The war ended and Japan surrended as everyone knows. Maybe because so many nationalities were fighting the same war, everyone wanted to do their own certain memorial or museum, I'm not entirely sure. A final beer by the pool with the Qantas crew and I was hungry and tired and went back to the Arab Quarter to eat, then sleep...

I thought Singapore ...

Singapore, Singapore frechdaxxxAfter months of planning we're finally off to South East Asia. We had a very good flight with Emirates to Dubai, quite long but with two meals and good entertainment we arrived in Dubai, our first stop. The airport looks like a massive city and shopping mall, and every luxury item the world can dream up is for sale here. For only two hours could we stop and have a drink before waiting for the next flight to Singapore. The second flight was on a much improved on the ...
