i had stayed at the metropolitan hotel a few years ago and loved it.....i was on a business trip to toronto arriving at midnight leaving at 4:00, so time was crucial...i needed a place close by to my business appointment...i called the hotel to confirm the location was good for me, i also requested non-scented cleaning products to be used in the room,a room located far away from the elevators and i needed two double beds. i read the negative reviews others had written about the hotel, became concerned and called the hotel to review my reservation and requests...i was assured all my requests would be met, and that the hotel was a short walking distance to my destination. i arrived at the hotel at midnight, was given a room with only one double bed....after i called down to the front desk, they agreed to change rooms, but the other rooms had been cleaned with scented cleaning products, so i stayed.... the room was clean, and the bed linens are the best! i requested a wake-up call, and room service of coffee and tea to coordinate with the wake-up call....this was delightfully carried out by friendly staff. the short walk,which they actually gave me directions to.... ended up being a 15 minute cab ride (after i had walked about 15 minutes)...and i was late for my appointment. when the front desk asked me about my stay, i related my disappointments, and they comped me the coffee and tea wake-up call. in terms of mortar and bricks (and bed linens) the hotel is world-class, in terms of service, it was disappointing, and my tardiness to my appointment reflected poorly on me. i don't have a clue why i didn't listen to the majority of the reviewers that gave this hotel a poor rating!
I stayed at the Metropolitan for 5 nights in February this year having booked it through a promotion at Trailfinders. As a solo female, I found the front of house staff (particularly the women) very courteous, friendly and prepared to go out of their way with help regarding directions, train travel arrangements and restaurant recommendations.
I was extremely worried before I left for my trip and saw these reviews. I saw incredible rates on hotel.com about 3 weeks before I was ready to make reservations. At that point, few hotels were available for a good price (since it was Christmas time).We got to the hotel and it was right in the middle of everything.1- Right by times square 2- Two blocks from Rockafeller Center (we saw a couple get engaged on the ice skating rink) 3- There's a subway outside of the hotel. 4- Our room was big with a huge mirror on the desk infront of the bed. 5- It had everything we needed. 6- Huge king sized bed. 7- The front desk and staff were extremely helpful and courteous with everything and anything we needed. They even helped us find a restaraunt who delivered at 2am.It wasn't a Waldorf Astoria or Ritz, but for a fair price you get a great hotel. I really couldn't have asked for anything more for the money that I spent. I paid $150/night and made my reservations less than a week before my trip (2 days before Christmas in New York City).Great trip, great hotel. Don't believe the hype on some of these reviews. Also, if you go to New York...try to see the show called DE LA GuARDA. - most amazing show I've EVER seen in my life. Highly recommended.
Front Desk Check In Terrible
We had booked our room on Expedia, we had specifically asked for 2 beds upon booking. Once we arrived at the hotel,we were informed that the room had 1 bed and that there was no available rooms left and that we could upgrade to a luxury suite at our expense. The service at the front desk was HORRIBLE throughout this fiasco. Finally,after that issue was resolved we were able to get a room that we had original requested. The room was very small; although the decor was nice. The location is not the most appealing. However, it does offer some authentic dining within walking distance of the hotel. Based upon the check in experience alone,the Metropolitian will not be my hotel of choice when I visit Toronto again.
We stayed at the Metropolitan for 4 nights in early October. Although the room was on the small side, it was clean and tidy and the staff were quite helpful. We didn't think much of the quality of the food or the service in Hemispheres Resturant although the bar was quite pleasant. The area around the hotel seemed a bit 'dodgy' for a couple of blocks but we were perfectly placed to do all the sightseeing and shopping we wanted. One word of advice - we used a so called limo service recommended by the door staff one evening to take us to a wedding reception. Not only did the driver get us there over 1/2 hour late, I ended up giving him directions as he was lost (I live in the UK!) and he expected a tip. Would return and stay here again though.
Having stayed at the Metropolitan Hotel in August 2003 we would not recommend the hotel to anyone considering a stay at a "luxury" hotel.
I booked a room at the Metropolitan because of an $85-per-night (US) on Expedia. I regret it. I specifically asked for a nonsmoking room with one queen bed and got a reeking room with two twins. The two beds would not have been a problem but for the fact that the room was so tiny I couldn't push the chair back from my "desk" without bumping into the badly placed second bed. I asked for a wakeup call for the morning of the business that brought me to Toronto and didn't get it. The room was aesthetically displeasing, with hideous pink stucco walls. The bathroom was smaller than I expect from hotels that claim to have four stars.
We reserved a Luxury room well in advance of our trip, and arrived at the hotel having been led to expect a fair of... well, luxury. Instead, we found small rooms (nice linens, but uncomfortable beds), severely restricted room service (due in large part, we were told, to the SARS scare earlier in the year: their restaurants are running, but they only provide room service during certain hours that aren't documented anywhere, especially in the information in the rooms), and a distinct lack of friendliness/support from the hotel staff. (Oh, yeah. The "broadband internet access" from all rooms didn't work until *I* fixed their in-room modem.)
What a disappointment! Before coming to Toronto for a wedding in May, we did extensive research to find a nice & convenient hotel to stay in...the website for the Metropolitan hotel caught our eye with its modern decor in its rooms and central location. When we arrived we found just the opposite. We had upgraded to a suite to get a king-size bed and must have been placed in a still-to-be-rehabbed room because the decor was like any Holiday Inn type room with fabric headboard matching the drapes...the room was very small, suite consisted of two normal rooms with access between each other...and when we spent all day walking around downtown and returned to our room at 3PM it still hadn't been cleaned! Fortunately the front desk was always very helpful and responsive to us - a bright point! A previous reviewer remarked that you must use their valet service, which is not the case...there is the option to self-park for $19CAD/day but the underground garage is very tight space when cars coming in different directions...and while hotel is centrally located that's just it...it is central to the downtown/financial district and Bloor Street but has little of interest in its immediate area save the Eaton Centre... All in all we felt misled by the hotel's website...
We stayed at the Metropolitan Hotel on Chestnut in downtown Toronto 3-23-03. $4-5CAN cab to anything downtown or in financial or entertainment district. Free morning shuttle to downtown area - ask. Good hotel. Nice room. Pool and amenities nice. Website photos are accurate but all is smaller than appears on site. You must use valet parking at about $10, and that is what you'd want anyway since it would be way too much hassle to deal with downtown parking. Door and bell staff were really wonderful, helpful, and well beyond expectations. Front desk staff was also remarkably capable and helpful. I cannot say I've stayed anywhere before that has been better at service. That is their forte. The room was nice, but small, as is to be expected in an older high rise downtown hotel. All was well maintained, spotless, and absolutely 4 star, as most sites describe this hotel. We were on vacation but if I had been traveling on business, I'd have been grateful for the calmness, quiet, service, and sense of peace in this hotel. What a haven after a hard day! It was a good place and I will return.
