... this was one of those moments. We stopped to watch a road side street performance. We didn't catch much, since the language was Indonesian, but it was entertaining. The square outside the old Governors mansion was festive, with this being the Eid weekend. We joked that these were all the people who couldn't get a hotel outside the city. ... the most shocking- families living under a bridge next to a stagnant river getting by with whatever means possible. Many thousands of people live like this in Jakarta, it is shocking and outrageous considering the wealth present in other areas not far away.

I began my 7 week backpacking trip today and I arrived at Jakarta airport with no problems. I got the DAMRI Bus 40k IDR to Cilengusi in East Jakarta to stay with a couch surfer. The journey should have taken one hour but took 2 hours. It was also a further one hour by motorbike from the bus station. Always check stop as I got off on the wrong stop.

... a loud protest. I asked if they needed foreigners for another scene and I was sad when they said no.

Next up was the Jakarta history museum and the art gallery, where I saw the prison for women, which was in the basement and halfway flooded. Don't know if it was like that back in the day, but I'm guessing yes.

The art gallery had a nice design and was simple, but pretty.

... was across this 'street' that ran in front of the monument. We went down and tickets were only 15,000 per person to visit the monument and go up to the top of it. My ticket was only 8,000 because that was the price for 'students' and I showed the guy my UK college ID and apparently he told Laila I was too old.
