Got on a Eurostar (fast train) in Rome for our trip to Switzerland. I was rather looking forward to it as I have never been on one before. We had seats allocated and the train was packed to capacity. For a journey of 580 Km to Milan with stops in Florence and Bologna we had 3 hours 15 minutes allocated, not bad when you think. Between Rome and Bologna we were doing 250kph and between Bologna and Milan 300kph that's moving. In ...

I caught the train up to Bern on Friday, about an hour from Lausanne in the German speaking part of Switzerland. This is where Tim and Annik and their new baby, Anya, live. Annik just started back ...

They are ripping up the main pedestrian street from the train station to the middle ...

... it'. Here in Switzerland though, they do things a bit, erm, differently. We should have seen it coming. It's not like there weren't signs. We went for a hike in Liechtenstein and saw on the map that we would be passing by a 'Hütte' (Hut) on the way down. Great, we thought, conjuring up images from the Alpine Club of Canada. With any luck there would be an outhouse, maybe a water source. Not quite. This Hütte was more like a restaurant, complete with ...

... could be anywhere from 4-9 Euro. In Switzerland it was 18 franks. Which is still almost 16 euro. It was nuts how expensive everything was. But we got lucky and found someone who hosted us there too. So we lived with her and her family for a week and it was amazing.

We get there and our host told us she was going to Barcelona for the week for vacation. And her parents don’t really speak English. So it was going to be an interesting week. But they ...
