The 12 volt situation was not resolved until the next morning when after a call to Melbourne and a drive to local hardware store to pick up a couple of parts Grant and our friendly neighbour Dave fixed the problem. Seems that the boot fuse inside the fuse cover had burnt out rather than shorted out and that was our problem. Thank God I have a handy husband.
