... seemed to be only one going to Srinagar and he was asking 1000 INR and had only two places left and was leaving at 09:30, so we took it. We had barely an hour to check out of our respective hotel. I returned to mine, the New International Hotel, to find the manager stucked on getting 1500 INR per night for the room which had barely 2 hours of electricity per day, no hot water, and even no water at all on the last day. Finally, the owner came down and we ...

I can't imagine how they knew what was where, but the system did seem to work. Alex found a gorgeous amethyst ring to replace the turquoise ring she lost somewhere in Delhi, and I bought a lovely present for Kath's birthday. It was hilarious and such fun to shop like that! We returned a different way, this time passing the village ...

... a cold drink. Sitting on the verandah we noticed black smoke on the opposite side of the canal. It looked like a house was on fire behind a houseboat. Ashraf and his brothers jumped into a shikara and rushed to help along with many others. It looked like panic, chaos and utter confusion. Some people were working on moving the houseboat, we could see flames which seemed to be spreading and eventually we could see a hose and some ...
