Our delightful hosts Joanne and Dennis made us breakfast and sat and chatted for quite a while. They suggested we go up Mt John to the university observatory and cafe. A $5 fee secured us entry to the road which snaked up the mountain. Mt John rises steeply in much the same way as Uluru) from Tekapo. Perched on the summit over 1 000m high, is a …

... ankle/knee/foot/body pain... I'm getting old. We decided to run The International once more, then ski to the next chair lift, catch that to the top of the mountain and then ski down to the cafe. All in all, this took us about 45 minutes. It was early afternoon, so we headed in for lunch and a celebratory beer before catching the 3pm bus back to Methven. We were back in Christchurch by dinner! This is a lifestyle I can get used ...

Merry Xmas. Lovely sunny morning, 10c out side. Paula, Les and I walked down to the Kowai river. Lots of wild roadside flowers everywhere. No snow on the mountain. Back for a shared breakfast with the family. Then I made some bacon and cheese muffins for morning tea, as more family arrived. I also made sushi, salmon, crayfish ...
