A 16th century building with 21st century style
I hesitate to write this review because I want to keep the hotel to myself. But since I read other's reviews in planning a trip, I think it's only fair. Meson Sacristia De Capuchinas is a gem....a 16th century building with 21st century style.
The staff was delightful- warm, and charming, and attentive. When I arrived, there were a couple of rooms available and I was shown both and given my choice. It was well appointed and a perfect mix of antiques and contemporary comfort. Each day, when I returned from a day of exploring Puebla, there was a plate of cookies and dulces waiting on the table by my door. And in the morning, the breakfast choices were varied and all were terrific.
I was traveling alone and treated royally- even lent an umbrella when I was going to walk through the rainy streets to dinner. One non-hotel note: the Amparo Museum is just doors away and has an excellent prehispanic art collection. It has free admission on Mondays, a day when almost all other museums are closed.
Romance package and cooking classes stir up delectible fun
Mesones Sacristia in Puebla, Mexico, is a delightful inn with personal service on par with top five star hotels. The restored courtyard-style building once served as an apartment house and now affords guests stylish, antique filled, privacy in one of the standard, Jr suite or master suites. We had a chance to see three of the rooms (one of each type) and each was unique and inviting in it's own way. Our romance package was divine, with pedals from dozens of roses strewn across the floor and arranged in a heart on the bed; a path of candles led from the door to the bed. It was picture perfect.
While staying a Mesones Sacristia we took a three-day cooking course. Not only was Chef Alonso approachable and funny, he really knew his stuff. With the help of his two assistants, Mariana and Mariana, we learned how to make salsa verde and rojo, the basis for so many of the other sauces and dishes we learned. We visited the market and learned about all the different kinds of chiles and purchased some to bring home. After each class, we sat in the hotel dining room and were served the dishes we'd prepared during the class. We always left with a smile on our face and a full stomach.
Of particular note is the courteous, knowledgeable public relations manager, Mariana Alonso. She was instrumental in helping arrange our accommodations and class ahead of time and provided information about nearby sites of interest during our stay. She even came with us to the market to help us negotiate the purchase on an antique we had found.
The food at the hotel was authentic and delicious. Complimentary breakfast is included with the room and is much more that coffee, fruit and a bun. You have a choice of authentic dishes, eggs, waffles, fruit, etc. Dinner was exceptional. The dishes we sampled were top-notch examples of local cuisine, some of the best we had during our stay.
All in all, we loved our stay and would highly recommend this hotel.
The only word of caution is to make sure you have one of the guest rooms on the front of the building with exterior windows for ventilation during warmer seasons. The back rooms are quieter, but can be stuffy and hot.
Great Restaurant at Mesones Sacristia!
We did not stay at the hotel but did eat lunch there February 2005. The meal was EXCELLENT! The touches were on the gourmet side for mexican cuisine. Ambience was colonial Mexican with a funky decorator touch. An example was the bar was designated with a sign that said "El Confesionario". Prices were less than we expected given the quality of the meal. Would definitely eat here again when in Puebla, Mexico.
My husband and I stayed at this unique hotel early in November 2004. It is located in a renovated colonial building close to restaurants and the shopping district. Almost all of the furnishings and decorative objects are antique and for sale. The pluses are the charming, funky ambiance and the friendly, accommodating staff. Unfortunately, the rooms are hot, stuffy and very noisy until late at night. Only three have outside windows (which open on a noisy street, but do let in some fresh air). Room # 8 is by far the largest and most attractive of the rooms. All other rooms have windows that open onto the interior courtyard (which houses a good restaurant/bar - another major source of noise) or have no windows at all! Also, closet space is limited, the plumbing is unreliable and the lighting is dim. If you like quirky charm, this is the place for you. If you prefer modern conveniences, eat a meal here, but stay at the Camino Real!
Private cooking classes & unique boutique hotel
We had an excellent time at Capuchinas for one week. We did a package that included cooking classes which turned out to be private with the head chef and translator! We could not afford cooking in France, so we found this at a great price and this was wonderful, people, course, food and hotel. A boutique hotel with a unique art collection and fountains/plants mixed into courtyard/entrance, and each room is different. Our package included breakfast to order, wow, and a day guided tour with Carlos, who is superb. You get to know the personable staff and stay in 300 year old rooms with eclectic furnishings and 20 ft ceilings.
Mexico at it's finest
Great little hotel, plenty of history (the building dates from the 1600s), with really personal service. As the other reviewers say, the staff are great and very helpful. Didn't even get annoyed when we woke them to let us in at 6am after a wedding reception...
Breakfasts are something else, all you can eat and they cook it all fresh for you, great hangover cure and handily served either in the restaurant or in your room.
Rooms are rustic, apparently most of the furniture is antique. Even the door locks are authentic, the keys are about 10 inches long!
My husband, brother, sister in law and I just returned for a wonderful trip to Puebla. The cooking classes taught by Alosono and inteterpreted in English by Marianna were excellent. The hotel, service and accomodations were wonderful. Puebla is town with much to see all the people were friendly and helpful. They all were patient with our minimal Spanish ability. Mariana is most helpful in helping to give suggetstions in your free time. We did some private tourning with Carlos ( recommended by Mariana) he was excellent and his English is excellent. The bus trip from Mexico City Airport was on a first class bus and took two hours.
This is a small, very nice hotel located about 5 minutes from the central plaza in Puebla. It is the sister hotel of another hotel a few blocks away. We stayed here in mid-2003 for three nights. There are maybe 6 or 7 rooms in the hotel, each one different and each one charming (but not "precious" or "cute"). What makes this place most enjoyable is its helpful and accomodating staff -- ask for something and it's yours. They will help with sight seeing, restaurants, transportation, or whatever you need to make your stay enjoyable. Rates include breakfast and newspapers (ingles or espanol), and you can walk to everywhere in Puebla from here. Rooms on the street are a bit noisier than others, as you would expect in Puebla, but not particularly so. Interior rooms are quiet. The restaurant is quite nice as well.
My sister and I just returned from a week at the Mesones Sacristía in Puebla. We visited local Indian sites and took cooking classes at the hotel. The package is offered on their website or you can make arrangements directly with the hotel ... This hotel is made up of two 17th century homes in the historic district of Puebla that have recently been converted into hotels of about 8 rooms each. I have never experienced such warm, personal attention as we received on this trip. All of the staff at the hotel was very attuned to our needs and desires. We arrived over two hours late the first night (11:30 pm) and they were waiting up for us. They went so far as to walk us to and from dinner in the evening. I do not think there is anything we could have asked for that would have been denied.The cooking classes were fantastic. We were given the opportunity to go to the market with the chef and experience fruits and chilis I had never seen before. We were allowed to select which dishes we would make in the class. After a morning of cooking, the food was served to us for lunch! For two days, the students consisted of my sister and I, but we were attended by two chefs and a translator. They seemed to be having as much fun as we were.I could not recommend this trip more highly.
