Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India pranavsharma... that I could blow off and leave it as a cultural change; I really took it to heart and let it make me feel as if it was just a rule for me and not for everyone.

It only took a few hours before I was in tears because I started to think about all the cultural changes and the rules. It really had nothing to do with shopping. I mean, I know that I love shopping, but I just got here, I don't need to be spending all of my money. It just ...

He holds it up and says,"art" .....pause.......then palms the ring in his fist and brings it to his chest "should be from the heart". I am blown away by his righteousness and thank him. The shop keeper apologises and I pay him 5 rupees for what he qouted at 4000 rupees. It is now 4 ...
Coimbatore, India ckridingaround... no idea how we didnt hit a person (lots of invisible bikes as well!) - it was total bedlam [well to the indians it was just another day!] On the way we also got hit by a truck - well more like a push to the side as we took a corner - but Franklin didnt even stop (in reality there was no way he could have in the chaos) or even care - it was normal! [Im not sure insurance even exist??] Our plan was to go to Ooty (or Udhagamandalam as its also known) where ...
Vellore, India feckinirish... you can look across the water and see animals trickling out of the forest from the hills down to the water to drink for the evenings. June and Len give everyone a play by play with their binoculars glued to their eyes of what the animals are doing. High drama indeed. To my untrained eye, the animals are drinking. To June, there is significance in their every movement. "Did you see how the boy looked at the girls?" "Look, there's another boy coming" "oh my gawd, did you see the other one ...
Thekaddy, India inahillebrand... the feeling that Suresh (the owner) and his wife, Susheela, hope to provoke from their visitors. On the jeepride up, between bumps that reminded me of "Mr. Toad's Wild Ride" or "Indiana Jones Jungle Safari" at Disney Land, Suresh explained to us that Honey Valley is a homestay, not a lodge or a hotel; it is a place for people to get away from the busy city life and relax; for foreigners to meet a family and understand a laid back part of Indian culture ...
Kakkabe, India ruthiucsd... a cough, probably in the same way a teenager tries to drink a shot of whiskey without flinching. . The men all around saw this, the old man smiled, and all broke out into gales of laughter, including myself. Inhaling another pull from my own cigarette, I put my hand to my chest and explained, "strong." Strong, they all repeated, and there was much back patting and shaking of hands. Not a lot happens in these small towns, and these things are quite an event. But I have miles to go ...
Ooty, Tamil Nadu, India bloomer... Mr. Naghabushan) was not allowed to see any of the plans for the BMIC and handed his land over and was compensated for it. The government cut down 750 coconut trees on that land, and several more acres are due to be taken. While this seems alright at first, maps for the BMIC were then released and it was discovered that Mr Naghabushan's land was confiscated illegally. It is well over twenty kilometers from the swathe of land due to be confiscated for the BMIC and the ...
Bangalore, India lindsayann... been working very ******* women's rights there. Before, this slum didn't even have a toilet and women were forced to use open fields, which led to serious harassment. The lack of hygiene was also a serious problem and the women and children in particular were suffering from various diseases because they weren't able to clean themselves properly. Through the work of this organisation, this slum now has two buildings that boast toilets and areas to wash clothes in, not to mention running ...
Bangalore, India lindsayann... and went to sleep. I awoke suddenly around 2am with a searing pain in my gut and made for the bathroom. I experienced the worst bout of vomiting I've ever experienced, which I'm not going to go into in any detail you'll be pleased to know. But in my eyes, this marked a turning point in the holiday where things started to go sour. Everything had been roses for me up until that point, although my father had been struggling for a couple of days now. I never ...
