... scenes with chalk. We relied on Bob's memory of the language to help us order and speak to the salespeople. He did great, even though it's been more than 40 years since he lived here. Just a little knowledge of a language can go a long way.


Kath and I went on to do some shopping while the guys sat near the fountain in the park, next to the cathedral. I bought a beer stein to add to Bob's collection from the 70's. Kath bought a mini shadow box ...

Even on the phone, with no hands, or carrying all of the shopping home. Lots of customised bikes too... Prams or carts on the front, bikes with two seats and one set of pedals... Fun to see - and there is no dawdling - it's GO or STOP. We had to be very alert at the road ...

After our tour, we met up with Chews and went to the Apothecary and then on to a restaurant for apple strudel. It was touted by the tour director as the best in Cologne, but Grandma Smith's was MUCH better. There were lots of apples and it was tasty but very doughy in my opinion...I like a flakey crust.
