“In need of renovation”

The reality of the Mercure is not what the website suggests. We had a beautiful view of Lake Wakatipu, that much is true. The rooms, however, are old, late 70s from the looks, and in dire need of renovation as well as refurbishing. Web access is ridiculous... Can definitley improve a lot! Really annoying is the fact that several times, even in writing, they try to sell you their membership card. One "No" is not enough, obviously. Next stay not here.

Everyone should start their day strolling around the base of a glacier! We took a walk around the Fox Glacier this morning, admiring that element that I hoped not to see this calendar year – snow! This glacier and its neighbor, Franz Joseph Glacier, are reportedly the most accessible glaciers in the world due to their low altitudes.

We English overuse superlatives to …

We slept in today and began our leisurely 2 hour drive back to Queenstown from Te Anau. We grabbed a couple of pies from “Miles Better Pies” in Te Anau and enjoyed them in a picnic area along Lake Wakatipu on the way to Queenstown. After checking into the Mercure Resort Queenstown, we walked into town and browsed the shops and enjoyed …

Our first stop this morning was the wet, wild and extremely windy Haast beach. What a shame that we awoke to a downpour - because if the weather had been better this would have been a sensational place to spend a couple of hours of beachcombing. Alongside the shells and smoothed stones, all sorts of twisted pieces of wood had been washed up - which …
