The Mercure was the more expensive hotel we stayed at while in New Zeland. It wasn't exactly 5 star but we had no complaints - apart from the magnetic key reader on our room door. The first day there it refused on multiple occasions to read our card but after some new cards were coded and maintenance cleaned the reader, it seemed to be OK for the remainder of our stay. Views from the restaurant/bar were amazing out over the lake and the Remarkables.

A last minute decision to go on the TSS Earnslaw turned out to be very worthwhile. We caught the morning cruise. Boarding was interrupted by the obligatory photo op but we were on holiday so we thought why not!

I couldn't decide what I liked more - the view from the back of the boat or the engine room. They had a gangway through the engine …

The most "touristy" thing we did was Skyline Gondola. We were hoping to have dinner here but they book out well in advance. Bummer - will know for next time.

I went up for a ride on the luge - we had 2 rides each. They start you on the beginners course before letting you on the "advanced" course. It had been raining earlier on the day and …

On leaving Wanaka a stop off at Puzzling World was in order. We didn't actually go in - just browsed the gift shop for some presents. We were going to head up to Cardrona but it was still too close to ski season and snow chains were required - something we didn't have with us.

Arriving in Queenstown we were too early to check in so …

... I only stayed for half of the match because I had to work at 11 am. They apparently bring around free pizza for a while....so I ended up getting to eat a little something....free foooooodddd always tastes so much better.

I headed out around 12 and said my goodbyes to Rod. Hopefully we will see each other again - either when I go to visit OZ in November or if Rod comes with me to Asia in September.
