... Monday was spent on the train. First I caught a train to Valence in France, then a connecting train to Nice. I can now say I am glad I am travelling solo. On the first train I was sitting with three Canadian girls who may have been travelling together for a smidge to long. While they were very polite to each other (they are Canadian) I could hear the tension in their voices and niggley little comments along the way. Travelling solo can be lonesome and hard work at times, but ...

"All they have in Monte Carlo is casinos, boats and racing cars," I recall telling someone at some point in time. And as I stepped off the ship's tender into a city edged with super-yachts and patrolled by luxury cars, I wasn't expecting a challenge to that statement, but in its own frustrating little way, Monte Carlo did challenge it and proved me wrong.

This hotel alone takes up 60,000 square feet of it. The location is famous for the hairpin bend of the racetrack formerly known as the Loews hairpin. It's the slowest corner in F1 so the hotel offers perfect viewing as they snake their way down the hill, round the hairpin then ...

... they even had Audis for taxis. We strolled up to the famous Monte Carlo Casino seen in movies such as James Bond etc. stunning. It was free to step inside and have a peak but all the big tables were behind closed doors. We had a couple drinks to take it all in. On the harbour they had a royal Show on, so we wandered through there and had a Nutella Crepe as a stop gap before dinner. We decided to eat back in Nice as it may be a ...

... of all situations on any cruise as everyone is eager to disembark and catch a tender boat, coach or taxi. Also breakfast in the Oceanview Cafe ends quite quickly and there's often a bit of wait before they begin serving lunch. As chaotic as it was we were lucky enough to grab some seats quite close to the exit. The food in the morning (and in general!) is great; full English breakfast for all us British folk. English bacon, black pudding, hash browns, baked beans and ...
