Historical Traveler Reviews of Mercure Inn Luxor 2m
Good And Bad
from polaris66
Stayed at the Mecure Inn last week and there are some good and bad points to this hotel.
The goods points are that the garden areas are quite pleasant and the pool is area is clean and tidy. The pool side resturant is very good and excellent value.
The Bar inside the Hotel provides sandwiches - which again I found to be of good value.
The Hotel itself what can I say - the buffet breakfast is awful and the service not very good.
The rooms at the Hotel are well below standard. Very dated and and tatty. Whilst I was there they tried to improve things by putting up pictures and changing the lamps. Overall the Hotel is looking very tired. I would only give this Hotel a 2 ** star rating. Some of the rooms at the back of the Hotel overlook the air conditioning units and these can be very noisy in the night.
I would also think very carefully about going halfboard, while I was there I seen people pay for halfboard only for a member of staff to come round the next day with a promotion making the price for halfboard even cheaper!
The location of the Hotel I would say is excellent, but whilst it is central you also get pestered a lot more . Also the carriages that wait outside the Hotel are a pain and in my case two of these carriages blocked my way so that I was unable to pass them by.
The staff at this Hotel are very friendly and ready to help - I was very surprised that they did not pester people for tips which is quite refreshing.
If you are looking for a cheap Hotel and not bothered about the standards I would say stay, but if you want a bit more I would not suggest staying here.
Dirty
from Nlordship415
I was there for honeymoon from the 24th to 31st of May. The photos are not ready yet but they will soon be available so they can show how dated the room was and how dirty. The bathroom was discusting. Although we had another room in the beginning with no view at all (again similar scenario when i had a quick look) when we said that we were there for honeymoon they gave as one with excellent view. So yes the view was great and the staff seemed friendly but they were hagging around extensively too long possibly waiting bahtsis as in local language....the most terible part started when the majority of the hotel guests from the 2nd 3rd day of our stay startred having stomach upset and the Farao's curse. There must have been something in the food or water. I have taken samples of water from the pool and one of the drinks they were offering and results will be given when ready. I'm only writting to warn you if you are visiting the place - do not drink any of the cold drings available unless canned - do not eat any of the salads unless boiled. The Health and Safety standards in this Hotel are non existent at the moment. The toilets are not cleaned properly and in some of them as in ours you are able to see the dirt. If you are going there take bleach and use it. Unfortunately for me it was too late. They are trying to take as much money as possible from any available sources. Do not use their phone it's expensive and they will ask for money even in emergencies - a couple staying there had exactly this problem. Thomas Cook destroyed our honeymoon and health by using this hotel as 4 star and recomending it to us. The shops are a great hussle and no thank you is not enough. Just ignoring them and walking did not help either. Beware of any transactions as they will all try to play with currencies. They will originaly say this is 4 pounds and when you expect 4 egyptian pounds they will ask for 40 exactly because they will pretend that the agreement was in english pounds which is roughly 40 egyptian = 4 british pounds. The carriages another great discrace in this country they will try to play so rough with money that you never know what to expect. Be carefull never take too much money with you and make clear in which currency you are negotiating. The location of the Hotel is central which is a major problem for hassle and the sewage works and dirt. Never again. I would recomend Nile Cruise stop to see the magnificent temples and tumbs or sites but do not stay eat or drink out of a boat.
Good Location

I have just returned from a 2 week stay at mecure inn (10th - 24th may 2006). I stayed in one of the larger rooms with 3 beds, the room was very spacious, but needed decorating. The bathroom was a reasonable size and fairly clean. The view from our balcony was of the roof at the back of the hotel, not the best view. The breakfast at the hotel had a big variety, the food was ok but the orange juice had maggots in it. After this it put me off eating there anymore. The pool side restaurant was reasonable prices, the pizzas were really nice but they do try to overcharge you.
The pool area is clean and their are sunbeds provided.
There are 3 shops on the drive of the hotel, they are expensive.
The hotel is in a great location, it is only one minute away from luxor temple and the nile. Just outside the hotel you do get a lot of hassle, just say no thankyou and keep on walking and they leave you alone.
Being three girls going alone I thought we would get a lot more hassle then we did, at first it was quite scary, but you soon get used to it.
I would go back to Luxor but I wouldn't stay at Mecure Inn again
Lovely hotel

my stay was most enjoyable the staff were very friendly breakfast was good it is not a luxury hotel but if you visit luxor you can't beat it the location is great. The 3 shop on site do hassle you to buy from their but i found if you had a laugh with them they left you alone, i did visit them at the end of my stay and i must say their good were very good and reasonable. I would go back tomorrow if i could.
Needs a refurbishment.

I'll give this hotel two stars:
One for the breakfast, and one for the location.
It is centrally located (downside of that is that it is tout central).
And the breakfast is superb, with the likes of falafel and the dessert om ali (spelling?) along with the usual eggs and whatnot.
But our room looked tired and dated. The hotel could use a refurbishment. We kept tripping getting out of the elevator as the floor at the exit of the lift was uneven. The bathroom was dark and dreary, with an old shower head, tiles, toilet, and shower curtain that just barely reached the bathtub.
The service was not the greatest -- when I asked for a hair dryer in the evening I was told to ask one in the morning after 7. I couldn't get one until 7:30, giving us just enough time to get breakfast before our 8 am tour.
When we wanted to use the Internet connection in the lobby, the front desk guy gave us a password that didn't work and couldn't figure out the problem or give us a working password.
And when we checked in, they told us they would charge the first night, as per their policy. Right, probably worried that folks would otherwise check out right away, which I really wanted to do.
They didn't charge us for couple of coffees which made up a bit for some of these things, so my mood softened somewhat as my stay went on.
Though we saved some money staying here, I still wish we had booked at the Sonesta St. George.
Shame about the Gauntlet of hassle
from GaffaUK
In our package holiday this was advertised as a 4 star - but to us it came across as a 2/3 star hotel. It is very well placed in Luxor. The rooms are fairly sizeable with balconys, dull decor, hard beds, nice clean bathrooms and basic facilities (TV with 3 English channels - CNN, Movie Channel and Discovery Channel). Staff were friendly enough. Breakfast was ok.
Although Luxor is known for it's hassle from shop owners, street vendors, taxi drivers etc etc - we found the 3 shops which are on the hotel grounds - and the only route (which we nicknamed the Gauntlet) from the hotel to the street - to be a complete hassle and annoyance. Everytime we wanted to walk out from or too the hotel we were continually accosted by the hairdressing, souvenir and clothes shop. Although plenty of hotels have stores inside (including Mecure Inn) no other hotel in Luxor seems to have this set up along it's route out.
The main Mecure along the Corniche looked nicer.
Best breakfast in Egypt!
from Haribowiam
We stayed at the Mercure for 2 nights during an organised tour of the country and found it very comfortable and well located. It was also very child friendly with a great pool. The breakfast was the best we sampled on our trip as were the breakfast boxes provided. The only advice I would give is if ordering food from the pool side bar, make sure you have plenty of time as you could have a long wait!
Mercure Inn - excellent
from A TripAdvisor Member
I have just returned from a fortnight's stay at the Mercure Inn in Luxor and definitely wish I was still there... The staff at this smaller-sized hotel are so friendly and helpful, I can't praise them enough.
The location of the hotel is excellent - v central and everything is v clean and comfortable.
I do hope there are plenty of you intending to visit Egypt despite recent troubles. It's an amazing country and the people so friendly. My son Chris and I had a wonderful holiday and we totally recommend the Mercure Inn as a base to anyone thinking of travelling to Luxor.
Mercure Inn - Wonderful
from MaxineB
We have just returned from Luxor for the first time. My husband did not want to go at all but agreed because I have always wanted to go. We stayed at the Mercure Inn on Temple Street and found it to be a wonderful hotel. The staff were extremely friendly, the rooms huge (including the bed!) and was very central for everything in Luxor.
We could not find any fault whatsoever with this small hotel. We would have no hesitation is staying there again (even my husband wants to return!). The only downside was that as it is just over the road from the Luxor Temple, there are caleshes and taxis lining the street and you get hassled everything you go out of the hotel grounds. BUT, this was the only minor irritation. PLEASE try this hotel, I cannot praise it enough. SMALL IS BEST!
Ideal location

Hi everyone
I visited Luxor last year and again this year in November, I stayed at the Mecure and thought it was a great hotel. The location is central and is situated right behind Luxor Temple, it is set back on its own private drive. I am going back on 17th January and have already booked my room.
I have spoken to many people who return year after year and they agree its one of the best hotels there, freindly staff, nice food etc....
It is classed as a two/three star hotel but I can highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for accomodation in Luxor.
The pool is small but clean and if it gets too busy you can use the Mercure Egotel pool which is much larger and only about a 10 minute walk, also it is much cheaper to cut out the travel agent and book your flights and hotel direct.
If anyone requires any further info feel free to E-mail me.
Happy holidays,
