A massive 670km drive south-west from Karumba took us to Mount Isa or 'The Isa' as it is locally known. Through more savannah and moving into rocky outcrops of granite the landscape was dry, vast and majestic. We made a stop at the Burke and Wills Roadhouse to refuel and stretch our legs, we had to make the stop (it was literally the only sign of human life for 100s of kilometres). The only sign I wasn't too keen ...

well..............someone put the cat amongst the pigeons and we actually ended up going from Three ways across to Mt Isa in one foul swoop. the destination of barkley homestead was changed the day before and decided that we would "push" on to Avon Downs. Well that was a little surprise all of its own. Hot, dry, arid, dusty no shower and questionable toilet facilities. ... the pipe holding the fishing rods had wriggled off and fortunately Suzanne yelled to me to stop as some of the rods fell out. Fortunately only 3 rods fell all the way out and were quickly retrieved with no damage.

We are now at Big 4 Mt Isa and hope to do about 650km tomorrow before heading north towards the Darwin region.

... the area had been cleared of saltwater crocs (no doubt by Johannes Jacobus Van De Merwe) so I plunged into the cool water hoping I would survive long enough to continue writing my blog. Later that day I took a hike up the river bank finally stopping to chat to a family of mum, dad and two young kids sitting on a sandy beach dangling their feet in the river. "Do you know there're crocodiles in this area?", I informed them. "How do you know where they are? ...

... was no rain in 6 months parts of the mine would have to start shutting down. After looking around town we went to the lookout and were surprised by how close the mines are to town, and watched the sunset. We had tea at the pub (forgot how cheap the pub meals in QLD are) but resisted the temptation of playing the pokies as we didn't want to get hooked and end up playing pokies in Isa for the next month!!!!!!!
