Soporific Sopot

... around before hauling out and acting as if they are not at all cold. Some Poles sunbathe as it will not be long before the weather is too cold to sit outside in your swimsuit.

After walking off the pier, we go for a walk on the beach. The beach extends for miles in either direction. I would imagine it might be possible to walk to Gdansk down the beach and Gdynia up the beach. People stop and ...

Deliciously Decadent Drink

... same chocolate. Oh heaven. This morning we headed directly to this café to check it out and to share with my hubby what a wonderful delicious thing this is.

While the Polish drink is not quite as decadent as that which I had in Croatia, it comes with so many more choices! You could get chocolate with coffee, with raspberries, with whiskey, Contreau, orange ...

Internationally Invisible

... would be all over us. Nothing. There are three other customers in the store and about 5 men working in the store. We wave at one and he waves back but does not approach. After looking at all the beds and prices and never seeing a clerk come close, we leave.

A restaurant on the sea shore. Many people sitting at tables outside for the sunset and the breeze ...

Gdansk Revisited

... know Mexican but it was very good.

Finally we got into Arthur’s Court or Artus Court which was a gentlemen’s club basically. It was inspired by the Knights of the Round Table so a lot of the decorations were related to that era but also plenty of hanging ship models as most of the men of that time made their money through shipping. It was quite an interesting place ...

Venturing Forth Yet Again Just For You

... br>
This majestic expanse of concrete housing 7,000 was thrust upon this city between 1970 and 1973 by architects I can only presume studied with those who brought us lovely downtown Podgorica. Orginally four separate buildings, someone got the bright idea to link them all together and thus the Falowiec (wave in English) was born. Indeed, the name is a reference to the marvels of communistic engineering that led the buildings to ...

Malbork Castle

... in all of Europe.  It was impressive, to say the least.  We had a local tour guide, some young guy named Wojtek, but he was very informative.

If you are unfamiliar with Gdansk, it is a seaside city on the Baltic Sea where, for lack of a better term, the beginning of the end of communism started here in the 1980's with Solidarity and Lech Walesa in the shipyards are Gdansk.  See the map on this travel blog for its ...

Gdansk, Poland

... bakery and Don got an eclair, I got something that tasted like pizza bread with pizza sauce and cheese and they were very good. We checked out the crystal - beautiful, but I have no way to get it home. Poland is famous for its crystal and art glass. After about an hour or so of that we were done with being wet, my hair was soaked because I couldn't keep it inside my hood, my feet were soaked, and I was soaked. We headed back ...

I'm in food heaven!

... by land and air as well. I took a boat from the city centre of Gdansk out to Westerplatte. The boat travelled past the shipyards and there were quite a few ships in port, including one from St. John's. In Westerplatte there is a large memorial to the events that began World War 2 and also commemorating the actions of the 220 Polish soldiers and civilians who attempted to defend against the German onslaught. They were able to hold out for a week before they were overtaken by the Nazi attack.

Couchsurfing again

... of couchsurfers come through their home, with at least one or two a week during the summer. What I didn't realize ahead of time is that they live about an hour by public transport outside of the city, so it wasn't so convenient for seeing things, but wasn't a big deal. They were busy with other things and didn't have time to show me around, so I did my exploring on my own. We all had dinner together each night though and I had a nice time talking to Inga.

Back to the Baltic

... to exit, we chose the wrong direction, but quickly realized the building numbers were going down rather than up. We found #25 on the opposite side of the street up a little hill on the bend in the road, there was no crosswalk, nor did there appear to be any sign of a hostel at number 25. We walk through the semi-darkness looking at the windows for something that doesn't resemble someone's house and made it down to the alley-like ...
