Old Town

... who had been waiting for us since 8:00 AM! We arrived around 12:00... Stefan left with Peter's parents for Belchatow (Kasia's home town) and Peter very kindly drove us to our apartment in the Old Town; a UNESCO World Heritage Site which was rebuilt after being destroyed in WWII. The narrow streets, surrounding protective medieval walls and beautifully crafted historical buildings remind us of Old Quebec back home. We will post pictures soon; my iPhone ...

Poland...the good and the bad

... we stopped at, but we did visit AFC -another ****ing church- which was nothing special in itself, except for the fact it was home to the apparently famous 'Black Madona' painting. Not really my thing, grabbed a quick photo apparently in the middle of a mass service that was taking place...ooops... so needless to say made a pretty quick exit out of there to go grab a bite to eat!

From here it was into Warsaw where we had a few drinks at a skybar atop of the ...

Visit to the fatherland! (updated pt.2)

... train into town, arriving right next to the gargantuan Palace of Culture and Science, a gift from Stalin during his reign. It’s the tallest building in Warsaw and is a massive example of Soviet futurism, just sitting there saying, “What? I’m gigantic and you’re not. What are you going to do about it?” Well, the answer to that question was to take pictures in front of it to really demonstrate its size, which was a mite ridiculous. Then we walked by ...

Friday in Warsaw

... there it smelt something like Krispy Kreme Donuts. In fact we have no real idea what we ended up with, but the dough tasted a bit like donut, although David's round one had some jam in it. Mine (croissant shaped) had chocolate flavoured something in it. In both cases we'd eaten almost half of it before we found any filling, but these were really good & really cheap. And the local popularity was encouraging. A couple of brief explorings & then David spotted a large ...

Germany in the Final, and Poland!

Well, havent been on here in a while, got lots and lots of photos to put up though! Wednesday night, Ane, Ben and I headed out on the town to watch the much anticipated match of Germany and Turkey, Turkey being slight favs. It all started when we were at an atm in the red light district of Berlin (alongside some hookers) when we started talking to a guy by the name of Lennie, who was working on a movie set in Berlin, for a 2 part miniseries, cool stuff. So he ...

Exploring Warsaw, old and new

... Later we visited a museum in an old house, where there was an excellent exibition. Children told of their experiences from the war and the prison camps, and Paul Eric was especially interested in those. We also visited a church, where again, they were remembering the past. You really could think the war was only a century ago, the way everyone is living in the past!

... we end up talking about the state of affairs in Poland, the healthcare system and its inadequecies. This is a common subjet of discussion. After a while I get a little snacky and she recommends the pierogis. I askl if they're homemade and she says with my own 2 hands. SWEET!! Home made pierogis. Okay people, THE BEST pierogis I've had in Warsaw are to be found in this restaurant. OH my gawd!! Delish. I am salivating again ...

... of the many language schools here in Warsaw. We feast on Dorota's excellent cooking. We start with egg salad, than have cream of tomato soup and than the main course of potatoes, pork and wild mushrooms. Dear god it's yummy. Around 9pm we all get going and Patrick offers us a ride halway to Mokotow in his BMW (pronounced BMVoo). The ride is mostly for Irena, my dad and I just follow along. We get home and I quickly go to sleep. I've had a busy day.

Last Day in Warsaw

... of town, so it's strictly for pedestrians only. I remember when I first steped foot in this part of town hearing the sound of an accordian player busking in front of a local restaurant and of all things these regular people came up to me offering to sell me some sort of pills or medication. She just pulled the **** right out of her purse and began her sales pitch to me, but I refused her firmly in Polish and walked away. In this ...

My first night in Warsaw

... since I was sandwiched in between two guys and one of the guys happened to be walking around the dorm wearing nothing except for these weird looking breifs with an outer space motif, I made it through and actually I met a lot of people and stayed up quite late conversing with the people in my room. After researching in my guide book, talking to my roommates and calling up my mother I went to bed, knowing that tomorrow I had a big day of sight seeing ahead of me.
