... trivia questions this morning included one about Germany. Q: How many fallen soldiers are buried in Germany? A: None... the only fallen allied personnel buried in Germany are Airforce, and when we get to Reichswald we see some of them. The thing that strikes me about these airmen, is how young they are. Most of them are 19 or 20...that seems pretty darn young to me. It was explained to me earlier in the pilgrimage that many of them were cadets and received training as ...
Oosterbeek, Gelderland, Netherlands vanruym.133... Valleyfield, Quebec also know the Cronshaw Family and they had it in mind to visit this grave. What a small world it is!
The story of the Canada Museum is a very interesting one and we were privileged to spend lunch hosted by the museum owner, Gilbert Van Landschoot, who gives us the background on his privately owned and operated museum/dance hall dedicated to preserving the truth about the sacrifice of Canadians during WW2. It all began when his ...
... food. Given that this journey took me nearly two hours in a car, it was no mean feat on a bicycle.
Some farming family took pity on Dad and took him in. I don't know how long he stayed or where exactly the farm was, only that it was somewhere near Hengelo. For all I know, it was Sander and Renata's place. I doubt if there is any way of finding out now, either. At the end of his stay, they put him on a bus back to ...
... with horses and foals gambolling in the fields outside the windows. Sander and Renata are very friendly. They greeted us at the backdoor next to their metre-deep paddling pool. Despite the tepid temperature, the kids donned their costumes and lept in, before we even got into the house.
After putting the children to bed, we talked for a bit. I had been on the go for 18 hours but I was having trouble sleeping. I guess the adrenaline was still pumping. Eventually I snuggled ...
... terminal moraines of the glacial extent of the Finno-Scandian Ice Sheet. (Hey, lighten up... I majored in this stuff at University).
Mountainous, forested, Zeddam is lovely, and the Kind folks at Hotel Moors made the trip much easier and more comfortable. I can't wait to get back... Its at Benedendorpsstraat 15.

This is Zwolle, my new home. I wanted to share a few pictures of the town with you guys and show you how pretty it is. The city is beautiful- plenty of good architecture and flowers everywhere. I love the brickwork on some of these buildings.
Zwolle, Overijssel, Netherlands bambles... what I envision Holland to look like. Small homes with thatched roofs and that red slate roof that you see in pictures. We spent the morning on the bus visiting different drop zones of the 508th, 505th and various bridges that were important during the battle. After a short drive we visited the Liberation Museum. It is a gorgeous small museum that explains what the Netherlands went through during the Nazi Occupation, which lasted for 4 ...
Nijmegen, Gelderland, Netherlands rustyd... if he wanted coffee, I piped in to break the awkward silence of the class and asked for one too (I don't even drink coffee). The teacher ended up getting me coffee! It was super awkward because I was totally joking, but it was a pretty nice gesture on my teacher's part. Later that evening one of the professors added me on facebook. I laughed. The rest of my classes are normal...nothing too exciting. I learned a lot of Dutch for one day. I ...
Auckland, Netherlands seawellk... it has suffer much during the war there is still old building standing and a good atmosphere (the allied bomb the town thinking they were above Germany). After the tour, We bought some bread and chips and went to get our bag, leaving a note to Arjen, and hiked to the best HH spot. We had to wait a moment but got a ride from a man who made us do the half way to Nijmegen at a Highway inbound. We didn't too long there either before getting a second ride direct to ...
Nijmegen, Netherlands maplefanta... LIE Here's an interesting tidbit on Dutch culture: Telling a lie is taken VERY seriously here, as the royal family recently learned. Here's the scoop: In July, Prince Johan Friso, the third in line to the throne, announced his engagement to his girlfriend of three years, Mabel. In order to remain in line for the throne, the prince has to gain permission from parliament to marry. To do this, he must convince the Prime ...
