As you all probably know, I will go to New Zealand in January 2010. I am doing the study Architecture at Victoria University in Wellington and this means I will be there for at least 5 years.
Everything has been taken care of, and I'm pretty much just counting the ...
Ermelo, Gelderland, Netherlands msmink... diverse people live in harmony... at least we try to.

The Netherlands Youth and The Seaforth Highlanders are a no show. No mention is made as to why but I suspect that summer holidays make getting people out to organized functions difficult here just as they do at home. We meet a few families on vacation. Parents are bringing their children here to remember the sacrifice of Canadians- their Liberators. It seems "the torch" of remembrance continues to be passed here.
Oosterbeek, Gelderland, Netherlands vanruym.133... Adegem Cemetery and the Canada Museum, a privately funded museum dedicated to preserving the story of Canada's contribution to the freedom of the people of this area.

The Leopold Canal is a long, staight canal running more or less east-west, just south of the border between Belgium and Holland. It's location is strategic and there was intense fighting by the Canadians to cross over this divide during The Battle of The Scheldt in November of 1944. The ...
Oosterbeek, Gelderland, Netherlands vanruym.133Renata left us in the centre of Hengelo around 9.30am. The main shopping area is pedestrianised, so it is nice to walk around. Dad's ghost walked round with us, nodding occasionally at some of the older buildings. I think he recognised the church but when I asked he just shrugged. "I was only four," he said.

During the war, the Dutch were starving. The cities, like Utrecht, fared worst, and many people travelled to ...
Hengelo, Overijssel, Netherlands rachelkw... my sleeping bag, only to hear the whine of a lone mosquito in the dark of my room. The kids had chosen to sleep together under a mosquito net, as if Overijssel was the last bastion of malaria. I pulled the hood of my sleeping bag round me, so that only my nose was showing. Half a minute later, the mosquito flew straight up my nose, causing me to writhe and snort ineffectually in my mummified, trussed state.

I don't know how the mozzie found me, but it stopped whining after that.
Deurningen, Overijssel, Netherlands rachelkw... terminal moraines of the glacial extent of the Finno-Scandian Ice Sheet. (Hey, lighten up... I majored in this stuff at University).

Mountainous, forested, Zeddam is lovely, and the Kind folks at Hotel Moors made the trip much easier and more comfortable. I can't wait to get back... Its at Benedendorpsstraat 15.

Lawndart
Zeddam, Gelderland, Netherlands lawndartWeek 4 Week four brought along with it my second week of classes. I am taking six courses and with those courses come a different group to work with. These courses also bring a lot of homework. It has led to quite a bit of time spent doing school work. It gets to be a bit stressful, but it is nice to be busy for the first time in a while. My classes are fairly dull and lack challenges, with the exception of one. Business ...

Utrecht, Netherlands johnsinclair... with people pedal-boating. I would have really liked to have joined them, but unfortunately time was not on our side.

And so, as our final train pulled into a suburban station on Amsterdam’s outskirts, we went our separate ways. I had to get off there to make a connecting train for the airport, while Amber was continuing on to the city, spending a couple of days back with her friend Tryn before then ...
Zwolle, Overijssel, Netherlands troywilkinson... to pick up supplies for the journey. Some of the pilgrims decided that they really didn't like boat travel, so they stayed behind a built a humongous church with capacity 10x the population at the time! Here is a piture of the church from the Fort of Leiden where the population of the City withstood a 131 day siege against the Spanish ending in 1574. The relief of the siege of Leiden is still celebrated on October 3. A ...
