I got off the bus and Fabio helped me with my luggage. We looked up the street and Sara S. was standing there. What a great sight, get off the bus and know someone immediately. Fabio went up to her, talked and pointed at me. She came toward me and gave me a hug.

Carol soon arrived and we went to eat. Great food and my first Caipirinha!!! I loved the rice and beans with every meal. The food and drinks were great.

Today I learned to laugh at myself. No need for embarassment when you are in another country, right? I went to Ambulatorio to interview my 3 patients. I called for Adelia (A-day-lee-a)…no response. Then Verginia tells me that it is pronounced A-day-lea! Whoo! I tried again, and she came with her daughter. She was soo cute! I enjoyed interviewing her and hearing her story. Then ...

Although I want to have my wife and daughter with me in some parts of the trip, perhaps 20 months is not enough time to convince my family that I will be out for 9 months and they do not have worry about me ... ... ve been hoping Brasil would beat South Africa and the other teams they played. Now, it was the team I had been rooting for and my own country! During the first half the U.S. scored two goals and my family blamed me! (jokingly of course) So, I was on the side of the U.S. However, in the second 45 minutes, Brasil came back and beat us 3-2. Great game, though!

... and Marcelo wanted to go to the mall. They saved me from boredom! We went to Dom Pedro mall, which I may have mentioned in an earlier entry. Wow, what a morning! Cristina and I left the house around 7:50 to catch the bus to downtown. Thursdays are my only interview-less days, so itīs best to run errands today. We arrived downtown and walked to the place where I could notarize my travel documents (passport, visa, customs form, etc.). They opened at 8:30, and I paid to get these documents notarized. This week a was a pretty good one. Monday and Tuesday were a little
slow, becasue we were trying to finalize the flow of recruitment. So,
Diama went with me on Tuesday afternoon to analyze the medical
records. I now can look through the records to find the woman's
diagnosis, date of diagnosis, referring city, and othe rpertinent
information...all in Portuguese...at least the acronyms for ...

... into a bed. Nice! I slept most of the trip except for meal times. Upon arriving in Sao Paulo, I took an 1 hour and 20 minute drive to Campinas. I checked into the Royal Palm Residence Hotel but I had to check out the next day. I found a cheaper hotel with more ammenities at a better price and in a nicer part of town, the TRYP Campinas.
