... Christmas when it ends. To see it live was surely to live out a dream. We awoke early in a truck stop where we had stopped for the night due to some thick flog on the previous evening that virtually left visibility at one to two meters. ... the spirit of a young soldier asking me to take him home. I would have had it been possible, yet he would have been returning to a very different city to the one he left a century ago.

A final thing about the Manchester cemetery was that one of the graves belonged to a soldier with the surname Ogden. While definitely a long-shot, I wondered if it could be a relative of my brother-in-law, Philip.

... be the shortest walking day so far. My angel, Laurence, said I should stay at Les Fourgs and I simply followed orders rather than check out the paltry 12kms it will demand of me. Looking on the bright side - wow, I'm now in glass half-full mode! - it means I can try to get Sunday Mass and a quick tour of the centre-ville before heading off to spend my final night in French lodgings before entering Switzerland on Monday.

Besançon was perfect. It seemed like a real place, not one tarted up for tourists Ora's one French guy put it "no make-up", although full of historical interest from its original settlement by the Gauls right through WW II, and plus other charms. The old town in contained by the loop of the Doubs and was just big enough that you anticipated seeing something new ...

... inches away, after having to ask for more directions from a very nice woman who was off to volunteer dog walk at the nearby humane society. We saw lots of nice looking dogs in the facility as we cycled past (tempting!) and of course often share our restaurant meals with the well-behaved dogs of other customers.

We finally found the campsite and decided it was as unappealing as the route there so ...
