Sorry Germany

A travel blog entry by arwie on Aug 27, 2014

Since we arrived in Trieste in July we have had barely two consecutive days without rain, often of biblical proportions. In pelting rain on a flooded campsite we review our travel plans this morning, abandon all thoughts of northern Germany and Holland and head south west into France. It pelts with rain as we drive through Germany. As we cross the border into France the sun comes out. Really weird! Overnight in Besancon in Mercure ...

... around by officials before finding the perfect park not far from the circuit. There were thunderstorms that day and we were lucky enough to find shelter under the eaves of a local tradition mud brick house. Great restaurants, cafÚs and shopping - all the stores are having their big clothing sales right now (good thing I am so limited in what I can add to my load) - and not expensive. It did thunder and pour with rain while we were there and Besanšon proved to be a great anchorage for us.

... and it was an amazingly pleasant experience.

With only the evensong of the birds and the hum of my tyres, and with the shadows on the water in the late afternoon light, it was so peaceful and beautiful. And to add another dimension to this ride, the landscape was changing from an open valley to one enclosed by hills. As we approached Besancon alongside the Doubs River in the narrowing valley, we could see the gathering clouds over the hills and the sombre ...
