    ... Galibier, we were mightily relieved to get to the summit in the dry and sunny weather, and descend in the relative warmth of the June sunshine. Unlike the other cols further north, there was no snow at the summit.

    After the meadows and pines marking the ascent, the landscape quickly changes on the north side of the col to bare rock and jagged outcrops.

    ... there doesn't seem to be much else on offer in the modern part of the city.

    The restaurant 'Spirit' hosted a folk group that travels throughout France by tractor. We clearly picked the place to stay in Brianšon that had a bit of life to it. The only disadvantage was that it was quite noisy in our room for all the French chat downstairs in the bar.

    ... descended another few hundred metres and found a hotel/restaurant, which offered us another chance to get warm. We bought some hot soup - the waitress even offered us dressing gowns to put over our wet clothes to keep warm! They were obviously prepared for nutcases like us!

    ... a right turn onto the D83 and a final 8 km ascent of the day to Aussois. I've come to the conclusion that ascents at the end of the day's riding are a really bad idea.

    By this time the weather had turned showery, which meant trying to keep dry and cool at the same time while continuing uphill. I opted for cool, and didn't put my jacket on and so got a soaking and chilled again as we arrived into Aussois.
