Dunedin - I've arrived

Here I am in Dunedin - wow it is chilly but so beautiful! I love this hotel and have been treated so well by all of the staff here. Can't believe how friendly people are here - and no JAFA jokes yet! Off to bed soon - just had a fabulous meal and getting ready for my big day tomorrow. I am meeting up with a friend who is going to show me all around Dunedin. Only here for two days so going to make the most of it here!!! See you soon!

I've got a Golden Ticket

... for a while. The coffee, music, talk and atmosphere made me feel almost like I was back at college in a coffee shop just off campus.

Our first activity was a tour of Cadbury World, the chocolate factory in Dunedin. It was sort of neat seeing behind the scenes, and especially getting free chocolate, but it was still just a factory. They had a chocolate fall, but it was just for entertainment purposes and had no manufacturing use. Later that evening we toured the ...

Beautiful scenery and a brewery

... colony. It is not the best time of year to see them, so in 2 hours we saw only 3 penguins (and 2 seals), but it was still lovely to see them in the wild. Two of them were very close to us, so we could see their yellow strip. we also visited the penguin hospital, where its 3 resident penguins looked at us suspiciously. Two were there for malnourishment and one had a bad foot. By now it was dark so we returned to Dunedin and cooked dinner. The next day we left Dunedin for Invercargill.

Deep south

... get all the globalisation you want, but walking down the main street of Dunedin not that much has changed in years, and years. The fashion looks at least 10 years out of date, the hairstyles sometimes even more historic, some of the cars on the street seen to be held together with gaffer tape. Absolutely none of this is a criticism however. In fact I think its great! Long may the deep south stay stuck in its ways. I wouldn't want it any other way. It was Orientation ...

... to see the albatrose, we were so early they did not start the tours until 2 hours later & we could not wait so we watched a video of the 60year old albatrose which comes back every year it was narreated by david attenborough, they have the same mate for life, but they think something must have happened to her original mate as he never returned, so she now mates a 30year old. we drove onto palmerston hoping we could drive through the dansey ...

Otago Peninsula

... Sandfly Bay, but since it was said to be much better on sunset I didn't go down to the beach there and returned there later. I drove on to the edge of the peninsula where there's an Albatros colony. These giant birds (2 meter wings) are flying around there all the time. It was very difficult to get good pictures of them since they were flying so fast, but after quite a few shots I got some good pics of them. It felt like I was ...

Done!!!

Road Trip Day 2

Second day and we had to do a little back tracking. I guess this is what happens when you don't plan your trip. We didn't have to back too far though, just about 20km. We headed back north towards a town called Twizel, then headed towards Mount Cook. Mount Cook, or Aoraki in Maori, meaning cloud piercer, is the biggest mountain in Australia and New Zealand at 3755 metres. I was worried that when we got there we wouldn't be able to see it because I guess it spends most of its time hiding ...

Tunnel Beach

... walk another 20 mintues along the road and through farmland to get to the beach itself. there was a pretty steep trail down to the beach, but man, it was worth every step! unfortunatly we had just missed the good light by the time we got there. the sun had just sunken below the cliff line, but (i think) the pictures came out well nonetheless. the sounds and the smells and the sights all came together and it was....just...amazing. we spent a good ...

Where are the parties at?

... sports. The first night I met up with the Stray folks at a bar and we were all disappointed in the lack of college night life, even for a Tuesday. We tried again the next night and the only place open was an Irish Pub. Our bowling plans were cashed but we did enjoy a calorie fest at Velvet Burger, yummy! There was much debate as to whether these burgers were better than Fergburgers ...
