Jaffa Hummus Cakes

... in the trendy pedestrian zone. Now I love Middle Eastern food as much as the next guy, and I consider hummus second only to falafel as an indispensable part of any meal there (OK maybe third after baklava). But I would have never imagined you could base an entire restaurant around it.

I stand corrected. Reuben went for the hummus with lamb, Cath the hummus with eggplant, and I with chicken liver -- and the menu extended well beyond that. Somehow I always ...

The Inside Scoop

... me feel like I don't know it anymore....I guess that's because I don't.
We meet up with some of his friends and of course he introduces me as his sister. They say we look nothing alike. We explain. We play shesh besh and I kick everyone's ass, Avshalom doesn't want to play with me anymore. He has won me before but yesterday was not his day. We watch the sunset and head home.

That night I went out with Einav, little sister. We went to see ...

The Miracle that is Israel

... we spent a day at Dolphin Reef,, a facility dedicated to the study and interaction of dolphins with humans. This wasn't just another 'swimming with the dolphins' or SeaWorld dolphin show experience, No, here, the dolphins are cared for, with no performances or expectations, other that allowing us to observe and minimally interact with these magnificent creatures. In this environment, there is a respect for the natural behaviours of the dolphins, and this is imparted in the ...

Day 21: Art and Alleys

... some conference.

Although Jaffa is maybe 4,000 years old (mentioned in the Bible (Jonah and the "whale"), conquered by the Phoenicians, Romans, Mamluks, and Napoleon, among others) the area around the park and nearby plaza looked new or renovated, and it was distinctly not busy. We went to the underground visitors' center to read about Jaffa's history and see some excavations; there also happened to be an adorable cluster of newborn kittens ...

R&R at the Dead Sea and some time at the Beach :)

... early Sunday morning. Because I flew from Vienna originally, my flight was later in the day on Sunday. I walked around Tel Aviv in the morning, and then headed to the airport 3.5 hours before my flight!

When you walk into the airport (even before you check in), the airport people start asking you questions about where you were and who you were traveling with. Then, they give you a number between 1 and 6, 1 being the safest and 6 being ...

Basic Army Training: Infantry Training/Sport

... and so that meant that all jokes were on the table. We met up for three nights at 1 AM in the morning and lasted until 4 AM, before the approximate 6 AM wake-up. Given the flaming diarrhea epidemic, we will likely have to sleep even less over the five remaining nights we have left to plan this thing: slideshow with pictures, a possible song, and best of all, a series of skits with the theme centering around a 20-year reunion in the future that, of course, deals with a Lost-like ...

The west bank

... a huge wall that segregates the palestinians from the rest of israel. Its really sad that these people are penned into a tiny percent of their homeland by a 3 metre high concrete fence. The walls are covered in graffiti, some of which is really moving and shows the contempt alot of the world has for some of Israels actions. Another shocking feature the palestinians have to endure are the holding pen like exit points, high security rooms with fingerprint scanners ...

Detour

... nice! So we went to his place, a nice new hillside house in an Arabic village with a view over towards Tel Aviv. His wife fixed dinner (I do not know what it was, but it tasted good). Mohamed has 5 kids, very cute, they gathered around me and stared at me first like I was some really strange thing (which I maybe am...). When I rolled a cigarette after dinner, they were really fascinated. I don't know, maybe you can't buy loose tobacco here, just cigarettes? I'll find out.

The Flight to Israel

... everyone gets emotional when landing. It's a real sense of coming home. At some point on the flight I started to calm down with my nerves & really look forward to the trip & know that all would work out as best as possible. I started to feel very excited. See, even though my husband & I were born in Israel, I left at the age of 3 & he left at 2. & although we were sporadically back for visits here & there, I wasn't in Israel for 15 years (the last ...
