I am on my way to Cabo de Gata from Granada. I, as usual, didn't do diligent enough research and so ended up in Almeria with a 4 hour layover. Normally I would be ecstatic about this as that is plenty of time to drop my bags at the station, roam around on a city bus and get a feel for one more Spanish city. However. Almeria doesn't believe in baggage drops at the station. In an "I am Josie. I am American." moment, I walked to a hotel to leave my bags there. No. Neither being ...
Almeria, Andalusia, Spain and Canary Islands josiezim... really interesting. We decided to check out the cathedral instead. It was ok but nothing like Toledo's. We didn't really like anything in Almeria - so we headed on our way north to Cabo de Gato. We traveled another 30 minutes or so and found a long stretch of white beaches with a small little town (also pretty shut down for the winter). We drove on in search of the Parque Natural - but ran into a dead end at a huge lighthouse and observatory. Our gps was all over the ...
Almeria, Andalusia, Spain stacicheckWoodlice on the face. That was my wake up call. And people complain about alarm clocks. Very tired now.

Pretty standard day though. Funny bit was when we were on the beach and instead of finding a bin we put our melon seeds in a hole we dug in the sand. At this point a crazy Spanish lady started ...
Castell de Ferro, Andalusia, Spain chris_jones01... someone had been waiting behind a rock near us. I couldnt have left faster if i tried. Very stressful moment.

So we cycled to the other side of Almeria but our journey was cut short due to a coastal windy road with no lights. We had no choice but to sleep where we were. which happened to be up some steps near a light house in the view of hookers. Seriously no other choice. Also, where we slept the happened to be 1cm by 1 inch orange woodlice crawling everywhere. Lovely.
Almería, Andalusia, Spain chris_jones01Smooth sailing and just as we arrived in Almerimar the wind blew up, so the timing was perfect. Checked into the Marina, which was a very pleasant experience to find one so professionally run and some English spoken as well. We explored the town for the afternoon and returned to the boat quite exhausted as the heat is now consistently up into the high 30's and doesn't seem to reach its ...
Almerimar, Spain psteerenberg... car here since her husband usually drives and she has to keep reminding herself, keep to the right. Luckily it was a short trip. As I was getting out, she said her husband knew of a sailor who kept his boat in Alaska and maybe I could keep an eye out for him. His name is Gary. I asked if that was his first name or last. She didn't know. So, if any of you Alaskans see Gary, be sure to tell him that the lady with the blue netting said hello. Yesterday I finally ...
Almerimar, Spain questmiller... and Jeff had six hours. We made great time and entered Almerimar harbor around 6:30 am. It was still pitch dark, but going slow and following our charts and the pilot book, we pulled up to the fuel dock to wait for morning light. The winds were predicted for strong and getting stronger. We had decided that this would be a great place to wait out our next clear stretch for the final push to Gibraltar. We were directed ...
