... have healthcare and free college education at state schools. Mert says taxes are high....although corporate taxes are lower (15%). Also, boys must serve one year in the military. Their economy is good. Right now their biggest issue is the Syrian refugees. So...Turkish history lesson 101 done! We're on the bus now on our way to Cappadoccia, where we will be spending 3 nights. ... Turkey since 1923. It is large (4 million people) and relatively modern. It has a historical past with linkages in prehistoric times to the Hittites(2000BC), the Phrygians(1000BC), the Lydians, Persians, Alexander the Great(325BC), Romans, Goths, Arabs, etc. Seems like everyone who was going somewhere passed through this region!

Tomorrow we are going to Cappadocia with its unique natural wonders.

Let's see, where did I last leave you... ah yes, sunset. As the sun was setting, the chef walked out onto the deck, rang a tiny bell to & fro (just like at Honey & Fafa's) and we were served our dinner. Scratch the term "dinner", make that our evening Mediterranean feast. I lost count of the exact number of courses but it was an embarrassment of gastronomic riches. ...

We sat in his place chatting for an hour or so before we mentioned that we needed to go and meet the truck at 3pm at the embassy to return to our hotel. ... by the Byzantines. We got lost on the way, and ended up wandering around an incredibly impoverished neighborhood at the base of the castle. There were children everywhere playing in the streets, and would all stop and stare as we walked by...there were homes with hardly any roof tops, and litter and garbage everywhere...I had never seen anything like it before, but the experience was very conjured up ...
