Freiburg and Titisee

... a bit of talking we decided to skip Lake Constance since it would most likely be very similar to Titisee and head directly into Switzerland to Zurich. We decided to free camp for the night since it was getting late anyway and looked for a little town off the main road once we had gone through immigration into Switzerland-which took about two seconds! We found a nice little town in the hills but there were not any parks and no one could park along the sides of the streets ...

Ticking off France.

... attempt to work out weather your route would take you through any of these places. Despite this the tourist office was found; actually via a very French invention. A cycle lane painted on the road that runs in the opposite direction to the traffic coming down a one way street. If the street is basically a vehicles width the effect is pretty alarming. The tourist office although superficially helpful had a problem. Their maps stopped about a mile from the office so I couldn't use ...

A nice detour

We caught the wrong train and wound up in Gengenbach. While we were waiting for a train back we met a lady who told us the town had a beautiful old-town section. So we went discovering again. After a good look around we stopped at a pub while we were waiting for the next train and got talking to the owner. Turns out he'd been to Australia on holiday, so we had a good time talking to him until it was time to go.

Glassblowing factory

Day trip from Villingen. Wolfach has a factory cum tourist attraction where they blow the glass manually. It was good to watch them making vases etc. in the traditional way. The highlight for me was dobbing Roz in to get up on the stage and blow her own vase. She did a good job, and we bought the vase and brought it home. A very special souvenir.

Cuckoo clock country

... whole process to us. Also went for a walk up the path that follows Germany's highest waterfall. Saw the worlds largest working cuckoo clock. It's literally the size of a house. So many woodcarving shops in this town. We caught a bus to another local town that has a clock museum. Some amazing gear in there.

Very small town

... Got the wobbly boot on after a few after-dinner beers and a couple of Jagermeisters. Strolled around town for a while just looking, and happily never lost my footing in the snow or on the ice covered footpaths. Did do a couple of tap dances, but didn't go down.

The Black Forest

... with costumes and masks and bands. Damn near froze standing still for that long, but I had a good vantage point for the pictures so I wasn't going to move for fear of losing my spot. After the parade we got stuck into the gluhwein and some hot food then went back to the hostel for a hot shower, then out for dinner. We went to a local brewery that had a restaurant incorporated and had such a good time that we made it a regular while we were there.

My first full weekend in Freiburg...

... is for sure. We have done so much this semester and it is hard to believe we are just now at halfway, haha. Enrollment for Semester at Sea's classes has now taken place as well... as far as I know, I should now be enrolled in the classes in which I both wanted and needed... I can only hope! Wish me luck with midterms! Yikes. The pictures with this entry pertain to Vauban, which is where I live, and to Freiburg in general...

yes I know i'm terrible at this

... they leave. We only have weeks of class and a month total of the program left. I didn't realize how much time that I have left; I'll still be here for almost 3 more months. I'm very excited about my internship this summer, but at the same time i'm finally looking forward to going home and going back to Emory to see everyone. I'm really sad that I'm going to miss graduation at Emory espescially since my grandbig is graduating. Despite those things ...

A warm goodbye to Freiburg

... Today was filled with packing, catching up on Dagmar's favorite tv show Supernatural (and it's growing on me too darn it!), and ahem, buying another small suitcase. I will blame the chocolate in my bag- very heavy stuff you know! ö But I really must fill you in on a very special evening we enjoyed last night. A dear friend of Sunny and Schnippi's took us on a historical walking tour of this very old city. Hartmut owns Historix-Tours based here in ...
