Will It Ever Stop...The Rain That Is!

A travel blog entry by wwh69 on Jan 17, 2015

... 1. Biggest Rainfall on Jan 17 since 1976.....what for it...noting it rained all night and all day....

      1.8 inches (45 mm)

      2. Highest Temp on Jan 17 since 1975...59F (or 15C).

Given that Cairns received over 700mm in the four days before I left (4-8 Jan), I don't think 45 mm really 'rates' but by Portland's standards, it's a RECORD!!

With that being said, I summonsed up the courage to brave the wet conditions ...

... a route a friendly bike shop employee had printed out the previous day which he said was a scenic route along less traveled country roads to connect with 101. The directions ended up being remarkably concise, and easy follow and led us up a gorgeous route cutting through the scenic countryside. We didn't get as far as we had hoped, and decided to try our luck knocking on a strangers door in Carlton to ask if we could set up our hammocks in their front yard. ...

Yesterday I met my first Indian child. He was visiting here with his parents. They were passing by and had worked here years ago. Looked to be 3 but was probably 4 or 5. He stared at me with his wide brown eyes, his mother spoke to him and ...

... ran into a lightning storm. A little further north the rain and hail hit- we had to slow way down in the highway because the rain was so intense and the storm so fierce. Two towns in a row we pulled off to fill up with gas to find the storm had taken out the electricity and we couldn't pump gas. Good thing we live by the rule that "your car is 'empty' when you're at a quarter tank." If we had actually waited till we were empty we ...
