Jaisalmer - the golden city

We arrived in Jaisalmer a bit bleary eyed after a long train journey from Jodhpur (made even longer by the fact that the train left an hour late!). As usual, our hotel pick-up was nowhere to be seen so we got a taxi to the hotel. Our hotel is called Sudarshan & Satkar and our room has another resident - Larry the lizard! Remembering that Sue said lizards were lucky as they ate flies & mossies, we accepted Larry in to our temporary home, and just made sure that he wasn't going to jump ...

The long and winding road

I knew from the mountain drives in Malaysia that the next 2 hours were going to be a test of her nerves. Steep narrow roads and blind hair pin bends do not mix well with stiff old buses and Indian drivers. "Why don't you take a couple of your calmer downers Mum" I suggested, quietly thinking that I could do with popping one myself.

Ootacamund, known as Ooty, is an old Raj hill station situated in the Nilgiri Hills at 7500ft. ... I (Aman) agree. I also thought that there must be tons of people, because there were about 20 shops, all selling the same thing! Mamiji bought 2 kilos of practically everything! I figured this would be her shopping for the next month or so. :)We went to the market today, and got some local home made chocolates.

... It was used to film A Passage to India, portrayed as the Marabar Express. We found an internet cafe tonight, but had left my pen drive in the hotel room doh!, so will get online tomorrow evening and post my blog. Things are changing, meals are served on banana leaf here, coffee is becoming more common that tea. Paratha or parotta is served more than chapatti and we can buy 'proper' loaves of bread. With so many plantations around it's not ...

... lucky to see one being filmed as we were there. I would love to tell you how exciting it is to watch a film being made, but it really isn't. The same 10-second scene was probably rehearsed, discussed and filmed repeatedly for about an hour. The segment we saw had about 10 dancers doing a kind of wobbling movement to form a semi-circle around an extremely butch looking woman who was strangely dressed like an LA gang-member. Indians don't understand the subtleties of ...

Highly unlikely as the rumbling and noise of the jeep could probably be heard in the next village. The peace and tranquility was refreshing however, away from the bustle of the towns and cities. So anyway, I come back to ...

... both Indian tourists as well as westerners. But it is still fun to say; Ooty, Ooty, Ooty... To get to Ooty we hired a car for the five hour drive from Mysore at the very reasonable price of 1500 rupees (nearly a thousand rupees less than the quote from our hotel, by the way). The drive took us through tea plantations, around hairpin turns up to an elevation of about 1800 meters. The driver was very cautious and gentle with his car, slowing nearly to stop ...
