Nkhata Bay, Malawi
There is something unsettling about waking up for Christmas after a night of drinking in a lakeside chalet in a country where you have never been before, with people you barely know. I was mainly looking forward to Christmas because it would be my first substantial meal in days. My diet in Malawi revolved around whatever I could find cheaply in town at markets (mainly mango and roasted corn) and dodgy restaurants that smell vaguely of sewage. Most of the restuarants have a menu with 6 items: ...

A local guy came over and started talking to me and ended up finding me someone to escort me to my accommodation (Mayoka vi...
Nkhata Bay, Malawi cat2222 We finally made it to Nkhata bay.
We ar staying at Mayoka Village again. Awesome place. We met up with Rich, Kat, Alex and Sam, I went to school with and worked with Rich. It was Kats 21st Birthday.
We Hired a boat for $10 each. We went along the shore and fed fish eagles, it was the most amazing thing. We threw some fish a couple of metres away from the boat an the fish eagle would fly down and catch the fish right infront of us. Next we went to a small cliff (about 10 or so m...
It took 2 days to get up lake Malawi, on the cheap substitute for the broken Llala. The Llala was a historical 1950's steam boat, I was quite keen on taking it up to Nhkata Bay. The old tank couldn't pass safety inspections before departure and we were transferred on to something called the 'Mtendere'. It did the job but it wasn't the classic ride I had been hoping for. Before cabin fever set in, we hit land and there was the prize, 'Mayoka Village, Nhkata Bay' It was a backpackers Mecca! Dir...
Nkhata Bay, Malawi gypsyjessieThe Journey to Nkhata Bay Today we planned to go to Nkhata Bay on the shores of Lake Malawi. We planned to catch a minibus to Mzuzu and then find transportation to Nkhata Bay. Based on several rec We left the Mushroom Farm as we hoped that if we left early we would be able to catch a ride down the hill. Once again, no luck with the ride. However, a lady did carry Isabella down in her wrap on her back. When we reached the bottom after only 2 hours we found two other gentlemen also waiting for ...
Nkhata Bay, Malawi sklitgordOn arrival in Dar es Salaam, capital city of Tanzania, we headed for a hostel trudging along in the downpours of rain, which had been falling since we left Zanzibar. Our plan was to spend a couple of days exploring Dar and then take an overnight train to Mbeya and from there catch a bus to the Malawi border. We spent the afternoon 'drying off' and waiting for the rain to ease, we finally gave in and decided it was never stopping and headed out in search of the train station to get train times...
Nkhata Bay, Malawi trish_and_kevin... not equipped to treat them there. The village raises money for transportation for AIDS patients because they have to see a doctor in a major centre every 3 months for a checkup and to get their medications. The nearest hospital to where we were was 70km away. This hospital is hoping to get some more resources to be able to treat the patients but they say it will be a long time coming. Currently they do not even ...
Chintheche, Malawi caralyn... only one oar. We reached the island with a canoe full of water and tied off to the buoy. As Wayne was untying the snorkel gear a mask fell away and went to the bottom. He tried several time to dive down and retrieve it but could not make it. After he rested a while he took off his tshirt and tried again, this time making it all the way to the bottom and finding the mask, yay J (on return to the boat shed we found out the depth was 18 metres). We swam the 100m ...
Nkhata Bay, Nkhata Bay, Malawi kasnsqueak... I can't really afford, especially when I am technically homeless right now and therefore have nowhere to put them anyway!
Dinner is spaghetti bolognaise and we have the punch and cake for Evi's birthday. She's ecstatic to find out that we managed to get a chocolate cake for her and quickly works out that it came from the Kande Beach cafe, rather than handmade by Luca as we tried to convince her!
As it's an early start tomorrow, I go to bed at 9pm.
... grab some dinner at 7pm (Vesh's beef stew and chapatti speciality!) and then crank the music up on the truck stereo and get the party started while flapping! Once everything is sorted, we head to the bar and play foosball and pool until we are the only ones left in the bar. By this point, everyone is pretty wrecked, especially Luca and Kieren so we pick on them until they leave (such easy targets!) and then we head back ourselves ...
