    Best Place Ever

This was probably one of the best experiences I have ever had at a hostel. Firstly, the actual placeis gorgeous - built on a rocky outcrop on Lake Malawi with magnificent views. The accomodation itself is fabulous, the bathrooms are stunning and clean and the eco-toilet is unique. It was so well maintained that it didn't smell or present any kind of problems at all. The showers are huge and look out over the lake. The whole atmosphere is fun and lively, with different food specials and activities taking place every day. we met some wonderful people on our trip there, and we were just facilitated in having as much fun as possible. Gary, the South African owner, found out we were from Johannesburg and instantly upgraded us from camping to a stunning double room with Lake view - for the same price as camping. All in all, a fabulous experience and I can't wait to go back.

    Great Spot

In another life, Mayoka Village could very easily have been a hippy commune. The thatched huts cling precariously to the side of a steep mountain and everyone seemed to know everyone else. The staff were extremely friendly and a litter of puppies was running wild biting every foot in sight. There was a notice board packed with activities, and free tea was offered at 4pm every afternoon. It was the perfect place to drop anchor for a few days.

    Day 69

We got away early as it was border crossing time, it had been 18 days in Tanzania, by far the longest in any country. The border was easy fortunately and we crossed into Malawi without much hassle or having to make any payments at all. The journey continued south and Corrie started spluttering. The previous day a few splutters h...

Soaking up the Sun in Malawi

We spent two and a half beautiful days relaxing on the shores of Lake Malawi at Kande beach. The campground was lovely. "Camping" in Africa means sleeping in a tent. But in most cases, the campgrounds are very nice. This campground had a nice bar, a pool table, a ping pong table, hammocks and shaded couches with cushions throughout the grounds, ...

    Where the Malawi are we?

After the trauma of cow decapitation (our sleeper train from Tanzania's capital Dar es Salaam to Mbeya ploughed into a herd of cows, killing at least five), we decided to treat ourselves to a week on the shores of stunning Lake Malawi. We divided the time between the rocky lakeside of Nkhata Bay and the long white sands of Kande Beach.
