Holding Pattern

A travel blog entry by mikeandsheila

Timor - the last island on our journey along the Indonesian Archipelago. A long cigar-shaped island, it is divided in two, the western half belonging to Indonesia, the east a separate, independent country, Timor Leste (East Timor). The word Timor (Timur) itself is Malay for 'east', recognising the geographical location of the place in relation to …

Goodbye Dili, hello Kupang

A travel blog entry by yoni

Jan 22, 2007 Monday Irina has recovered from the Dili Belly bug; and we got our passports back from the Indonesian embassy. We've spent 10 days in East Timor and started to believe we had over estimated the danger level there and everything was just okeydokey. But two days before we left emergency vehicles were headed west in front of our hotel …

Living an episode of 'Lost'...

... already bought return tickets for - but, then of course it might be. Therefore - obviously (to them), we were probably too far away, but (then after a few seconds debate between them) maybe not too far away to get to the other port to catch the slow ferry that might or might not be leaving at 10 am. The rather convoluted non verbalised implication delivered with a smile from our hosts was that we really should without doubt ...

The island of the pigs

A travel blog entry by kandjgonomad

This island is an island of pigs they are running around everywhere in the streets and on the beach. I mention this first only because in a predominantly Muslim nation this doesn't really happen much. Rote is not a Muslim island and for the first time in a while we didn't hear the call to prayer at sundown. Rote is one of the small islands off of the South coast of West Timor. It is known best for 2 things: (1) Reportedly other ...

Kepa to Nikiniki racetrack

A travel blog entry by mickoobyrne

... some great days on the Great  Ocean Road, the Gillies, The Oxley Hwy and the Great Alpine Road but the Kepa to Nikiniki road in West Timor is a cracker.  Those Australian roads are a ton of fun but lack the variety of never knowing that in the next second coming around the bend will be a minibus with eight or nine passengers a couple of goats and a few chickens on the roof all clinging on for dear life as the driver, looking out thru a mirrored image of the Virgin Mary ...

An OK option on the waterfront in Kupang. Ensuite rooms are $22 per night and ours was clean and comfortable, with air con. The free breakfast is pretty diabolical, except for the boiled egg, but at least it's free. One advantage is that the Maya Beach is close to the Lavalon Bar, probably Kupang's only hang out that caters to westerners, with good wifi, cold beer and a stunning location overlooking the bay.
