      Maya will do

An OK option on the waterfront in Kupang. Ensuite rooms are $22 per night and ours was clean and comfortable, with air con. The free breakfast is pretty diabolical, except for the boiled egg, but at least it's free. One advantage is that the Maya Beach is close to the Lavalon Bar, probably Kupang's only hang out that caters to westerners, with good wifi, cold beer and a stunning location overlooking the bay.

... gone and I will not go back to Bali or Singapore. We also would reach Australia exactly at the beginning of the rainy season. We immediately try to find new solutions but nothing makes me happy. I see one last chance, since the last ship starts in 2 days in Dili. Actually, it is impossible to reach Dili in one day and I need at least one day to clean the motorbike (quarantine inspection in Australia requires this). I start immediately to call with the ...

Many of the others are doing the same as they had plans too, so it is a bit messy but apparently very much the Indo way! Already the guy organising said the Indo team were still making changes so who knows what will happen next. Managed to get in a trip to Lietchfield National Park, did a bit of hiking and we were lucky enough to have enough water in all the waterfalls to ...

... had a room available and it turned out to be just perfect. It was an old little school converted into rooms round a courtyard. The family were so lovely and Poppy, the young girl, spoke fairly good English. John rushed around making sure I was happy and comfortable and gave me a scooter to use. I had come to Timor because on the map I spotted a village called "Niki Niki"! I just had to go there because as they constantly say in Indonesia "why not?"! I made ...

      The island of the pigs

This island is an island of pigs they are running around everywhere in the streets and on the beach. I mention this first only because in a predominantly Muslim nation this doesn't really happen much. Rote is not a Muslim island and for the first time in a while we didn't hear the call to prayer at sundown. Rote is one of the small islands off of the South coast of West Timor. It is known best for 2 things: (1) Reportedly other ...

... of banana groves, fantastic rain forest and small villages  of thached roofed beehive cottages. The speed is never that great, tops about 75/80km but the twists make it seem faster and a lot of fun. After a stop at a warung for some sort of rice dish I set off to search for Boti a village visited in 2009 but with the advantage of a guide in the car. I find that if you just stop beside someone on the road, look stupid and say Boti pointing ahead they take pity on you and ...
