Our majority of time in Russia was however spent in St Petersburg - a fine choice in hindsight. This is a much nicer city and I was amazed at how non-Soviet it looked (ie. pretty). Despite a three-year siege during WWII in which over a million people died (predominantly through starvation), the city was rebuilt to its original splendour.
