      We checked out of our hotel in Nafolio at 9 - just in time to miss the hordes of people from the cruise ship that docked overnight - taxi drivers even slept in their cars to be first in line for the fares. We headed north and west and drove a couple of hours to Sparta/i and Mystras. The militaristic Spartans of the 6th and 5th century BC left no ruins of note - and excavations have only gone down to the Roman era of first century BC. With Laura as my tour guide and her Greek classical knowledge she filled me in on who killed who, in the shape of what animal, ate what magical fruit and was boiled in what bathtub. The gate into and out of the city is worth the trip in itself. Being able to walk through a gate 3500 years old! Mind-blowing.
