Historical Traveler Reviews Aston Maui Kaanapali Villas Lahaina

          Horrible experience

The condition of the rooms is awful. You don't get exactly what you see on expedia. The description is over-rated. Some of the staff were helpful but others were completely unhelpful. The first room we were placed in was in terrible condition....smoky smelling, leaky ac, dirty carpet, old furniture, ants. They switched us the next day to another room but the ac made clanking noises in that room throughout the night & there were ants in the kitchen. They showed us other rooms but they were pretty much in the same shape. For the last 2 nights of our vacation, they moved us to a cleaner room but I would not recommend this chain. I was very dissatisfied with the overall condition of the villas....they are not as they were pictured on the internet. I did not get a very restful vacation thanks to this place.

Location, grounds great. Room 156 needs a lot of work.

We were in room # 7156. Great grounds and location of everything outside. Close to ocean, bar, pool. Everything outside was great.

Room is big but needs major repair and cleaning. Locks on patio door broken. Overall room condition was dirty. Bed spread very old and dirty. Under the bed was filthy. King bed advertised was two twins put together. Ait conditioning was not working when we got there. They did send someone and got it working, but not working right. I asked for a fan and they did send one. Without the fan it was very hot. Front door was broken. No do not disturb signs. Some other rooms had them. If they fix up this room I would stay there again.

          A great deal!

Great value. Surrounded by much more expensive hotels on a great (quiet) part of Kaanapali beach. Room was very large with upstaires loft area. Friends stayed at another unit that was even bigger. For the price of a normal hotel room you get a great deal here. Recommended!

          Fun in the Sun

My girlfriend and I stayed at the Kaanapali Villas in Aug for six days.

We got an oceanview studio room with a kitchenette. These rooms are timeshares and they rent out the rooms to tourists like us when the owners are not using their timeshares. We decided to pay extra for the oceanview room over the gardenview room. Our room was definitely closer to the ocean than the garden rooms, but we really couldnt see the ocean from our room. The room was facing the pool, with the ocean to the far right. Other rooms had magnificent views of the beach and ocean, with the room sitting a few feet from the beach, and i think those rooms cost way more. Other rooms offered by the villas include standard hotel rooms without kitchens, these are located in another 5 story building next to the studio rooms. Overall our time at the Villas was quite enjoyable. The room was spacious and clean. The kitchen was a definite added bonus, since we did not want to eat out every meal and having a kitchen meant we could have our own breakfast and sandwiches whenever we wanted, in the comfort of our own room. The staff was friendly and polite. The concierge was very nice and helpful with planning activities. A rental car is a must, since Lahaina (the major town with a ton of bars and restaurants) is a 15 min drive away. Kaanapali beach wasnt nearly as crowded as Lahaina beach. So Kaanapali is a nice area to stay at to avoid large crowds of vacationers. I would return, just as soon as I can save up enough money to go again.

          May 2003 Vacation

Be careful with the rooms. As these condos are individually owned they vary in decor and quality. We were initially checked into a room which was completely unaccepted for a supposed "Superior" resort. Fleas, leaking shower, stained carpet, appalling furniture and bedding. When we expressed dissatisfaction after one night the staff were excellent and gave us the choice of two other rooms. We ended up with a gorgeous room with full kitchen, huge lanai and top quality fittings. The property has the best stretch of beach and the pool area is lovely.

Very relaxing, well kept and lovely staff. The cafe is excellent! Would definitely stay again but specify a particular room!

          Loved the Kaanapali Villas

We have stayed at the Kaanapali Villas four times in the past 15 years.

We are staying there again this October. The condominiums are very nice. We suggest you stay behind the cafe and either to the right or left of the two pools. Absolutely beautiful beach. You can go to the Safeway mrkt. and store up on food. Then you can eat on your patio or in your room and not have to drive away. We tried to save money be eating out only at night. Our kids are grown now, but they enjoyed their vistis there too. In fact, our daughter even spent her honeymoon there, six years ago.

          June 2003 holiday

My wife and I have just returned from Maui Ka'anapali Villas, where we went to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary. We could not have chosen a better location, either in the choice of Maui, or the Villas. The island is easily the most beautiful and accommodating place we have ever visited, and the Villas were everything we hoped for, and more. The staff were all extremely helpful and friendly, the gardens and grounds most beautifully cared for, and the apartment spacious, splendidly furnished and well taken care of each day by the maid service.Thank you, Maui and the Ka'anapali Villas: unfortunately you have spoiled me, and I shall be very challenged to find any where else to come up to these standards in the future.K Bowen

          Good value Hotel

We stayed at the Kaanapali Villas from April 2-6, 2003 in one of the hotel rooms not the studios with kitchenettes. Overall the hotel was reasonable. The room appeared a little dated and the bathroom countertops had some cigarette burns. We paid $80/ night via Priceline which is significantly less than their promotional rates of around $130. The studios looked better; I think that some of the rooms are timeshares and appeared to be well maintained. The ground were nice and lush with tiki torches. The location is great to the beach. The beach is about 50 yards away. Awesome beach with the usual beach activities. The pool was just a standard pool. All and all, the hotel would be comparable to a Best Western.

          Maui Kaanapali Villas

We arrived at our accomodations late at night, dead tired and wondering what kind of set-up the villas were. In the morning we were treated to a breath taking view from our 5th floor windows of the garden and pools below with the beach and ocean in the horizon. Our adult family loved the location. Being able to take scuba lessons in the pool, play in the surf and walk the beach. The Castaway cafe provided us with delicious resonably priced breakfasts on the beach. We were pleased with the diplomacy and helpfulness of the front desk employees even when confronted by some other obnoxious impatient guests. It s some times the attitude of the guest that spoils their own holidays. What really helped us was the great activity co-ordinator named Linda. She helped us arrange for some memorable activities. We all hope to return to Maui to the exact same accomodations for our return trip. Thanks to Maui Kaanapali Villas!!!!!

I loved this property and had been there once before. It is quiet and right on the beach. The draw for me is the restauran/bar on the beach. It's great. This is a no frills place but it's quiet and away from all the hubub.

My last visit was supposed to be on 9/11. We got there a few days late and my travel partner had taken care keeping the records. Unfortunately, they did not bring the printouts with them. Therefore, we were changed at the rate I had booked for the first night and then it went up. Which is very suspicious, why two rates?

Had the same problem with another Aston in Waikiki on the same trip. They were adamant that I did not book the 5th night free and a lower rate. You would think that given the fact we had actually made it there and the place was vitrually empty they would have wanted to keep a returning customer satisfied. Also, I tried writing/faxing requesting a refund from both hotels of the balance that I was overchaged. Never happened. Again, my travel partner who kept the records never could find them. I'm not trying to pull a fast one, but when you are quoted $165 a night and you are charged that for the first night, then for some unexplainale reason, you are charged $195 for all the other nights and no 5th night free, you know they are pulling a fast one.

Unfortuately, I will never stay at another Aston property and I loved this one and would have gone back.

Good luck to you and keep your proof of purchases on hand.

... sea. Murray has had enough snorkelling for the day, but Dianne decides to have another go, venturing a fair way out in fairly shallow water, but doesn't see a lot, but it was just as good as the earlier swim. On the way back through the lava-rock passage to the entry spot, she nearly gets caught by the "wave of the day", but manages to see it in time, and waits for it to go before coming in.

Driving back towards civilisation, we pass the Makena State Park ...
