Doing what the people do in Matsumoto

We woke up rather late and had to rush down to breakfast. Getting out of bed when it's in the floor is tricky! We decided to go to the modern art gallery as the weather forecast was improving as the day progressed. The gallery was a fabulous space - the first thing to greet you was the incredible dotty flowers by Yayoi Kusama who is now world famous but was born in Matsumoto. Her exhibits were extraordinary all dotty. We loved the huge pumpkin room & mirrored rooms. We went ...

Leaving Tokyo was a bit stressful to say the least. We had 2 bags to forward to 2 future hotels on our itinerary. ... herself in not falling and Campbell has improved immensely in the last few days. Given this, we hiked the final 30 metres to the start of Skyline (which is roped off this time of year). Skyline is a beautiful ridge run, lots of fast places and then turns into the top of Karaswa which is a 2km cruiser to the Lodge. The kids skied it brilliantly and it was with a warm sun on our backs when we took our skis off for the last time and returned to the Lodge.

      The kids ...

In Japan there is a type of rail ticket called the Japan Rail Pass. This has the potential to save a lot of money over the course of your journey. However it can only be bought if you are out of the country. I had left it too late and so struggled to get mine, leaving my plans all up in the air. I managed to pick my pass up by sending it to my hosts for 2 days. This worked really well and because I had asked to stay with them early in my trip, I now had options ...
