Long Beach Pulau Perhentian Kecil, Terengganu, Malaysia
Another beach, another day. Life is so different on a Malaysian beach than a San Diego beach. Everything is in slow motion, no one wears shoes and monkeys are regarded as pets. Tranquil, but 6 days was our limit before we started to get bored. The only thing missing was night life. We showed up in Koala Besuit at around 6am and took a taxi to the Jetty to catch the 7am ferry. The skies looked treacherous from shore, but that doesn't stop the ferry driver with the wild look in his eyes. A swee...
Pulau Perhentian Kecil, Malaysia amwileyIt's the capital of Malaysia, a rather new city with no history inhabited by about 1.3 million, small by Asian standards. It is very modern, with decent public transport and solid infrastructure. It has the second tallest building in the world, but somehow it doesn't seem that tall throughout the city. KL mostly consists of shopping malls where the locals can escape the sweltering heat and enjoy the modern power of air conditioning. There are tons of shopping and more shopping sporting all t...
Kuala Lumpur, Wilayah Persekutuan, Malaysia mericanomad June 15th- 19th Perhentian Islands
So the great draw of the Perhentian islands is that it’s a relatively undeveloped (no roads, limited electricity, etc.) and the water is incredibly clear and warm and the sands are pure white and soft. It’s kind of an escape from everything, right down to its isolated and hard-to-get-to location. However, the Perhentians are also known for having extremely limited accommodation, especially the nicer places that have some amenities and a go...
Phew - I tell you - sometimes this travelling thing is really hard work. This week hasn't been one of those times! We have spent the most wonderful, relaxing week just hanging around doing not that much on an idyllic stretch of golden sand. Sorry to all of those reading who still have snow in their yards! The big news of the week is that I learned to snorkel. Yes, water 'fraidy cat herself is now a bona fide snorkeller. We went three days snorkelling in total - the first day I spent just gett...
Pulau Perhentian Kecil, Malaysia twoelders... to join him on his bathroom explorations. I was forever chasing these audacious amphibians with a broom.

Snorkeling
On the second day Mike and Sally who I'd met on the minibus from Cameron Highlands arrived on the island. As I'm so lovely I had reserved them a bungalow in advance round the corner from my hut at Matahari. On the third day we went on a snorkeling trip. We left the beach around 11am and were gone for five or six hours ...
Perhentian Kecil, Terengganu, Malaysia alastair6... and rib cage. I also felt like my spleen was going to burst and forget about having your bum feel all nice and comfy. Being so scared I just began to laugh uncontrollably - which made other girls at the front do the same. So basically the whole ride over had us girls laugh like maniacs while we felt like our heads were going to explode. By the end of the trip I literally had to take each finger and un-hinge them from the side railing of the boat. It took a good 10 minutes to get ...
Pulau Perhentian Kecil, Terengganu, Malaysia izunia... it’s relative proximity to Redang, the snorkelling is different. Although there are slightly less fish in Perhentians it does have other fantastic creatures to see – namely turtles and sharks. For the second time in our trip we got to swim with these beautiful animals, this time in lovely warm waters (unlike Galapagos) and also armed with our new underwater digital camera! The seas around ...
Pulau Perhentian Kecil, Terengganu, Malaysia caroline_little... sweaty with backpacks and two day old clothes that had been through the jungle. That arrival feeling is another of the awkward moments in the backpacking world. The people already there look at you with both empathy and happiness. Empathy for the feeling of arriving in a strange place, where all these other travelers have already set-up camp and are enjoying the good life, but then happiness for the fact that they aren't lugging a 15kg bag in the hot sun ...
Pulau Perhentian Kecil, Terengganu, Malaysia arikandcharis... i think... included trigger fish, parrot fish, barracuda, puffer fish...... hmmmm I don't know, there were so many! It was an amazing day though.... almost made up for the accommodations being such a rip off!!!!So that was our Malaysian Island experience... the next day we got back on a speed boat (sat in the back this time) picked up more people at other spots on the island... passing many of the local fishing boats along the way.... and then headed back to the mainland.
Pulau Perhentian Kecil, Terengganu, Malaysia heatherlindsay... life going on if you are staying at the Impiani because I think mostly, the people who chose this Resort are mainly divers or families with children. Besides hanging out at the restaurant, there will not be anything much to do for those who are looking to have some good music to dance to after a drink or two.

For us, that was fine. After our adventurous journey through Laos, we were looking forward to some rest and relaxation. I ...
