Another unprovoked wake up at 4:30am inspired a spontaneous trip to the local market which the locals frequent from 5am  - 7;30am.     The sights and overwhelming smells of Asian markets are a feast for the senses.    The meat section isn't for the faint of heart as various wads of unidentified meat begged for the haven of a refrigerator that was nowhere to be found.   A portion of the market however is dedicated to the ...

... only to learn a *********** in Indonesian pride and haggling. Our next stop was Surabaya, about 8 hours away from Banyuwangi. The end of Ramadan brings with it a holiday period, where everyone travels around the country. The trains were fully booked for a week, we were told, so the bus was our only option. We were hoping we could get onto a nice, airconditioned "bisnis" or "eksekutif" bus. A dodgy guy came and told us that for 150 000 rupiah we could go with ...

You didn't really need a gas mask for the short time that we were down there, but god help you if the wind catches the sulphur and engulfs you in it. It literally makes you feel like you can't breathe. It happened to Nils when he was down there, and he genuinely thought he was going to die. Plus, when ...

We started the day with a two hour walk through the local rice fields and rivers. One of the young men who works at Lesong guided us around. He pointed out to us various plants and fruits as we walked. A fellow was high in a tree lacing up some rubber strips to help catch the durians when they fell. We sucked on the flesh of the Cacau fruit though this time we did not stop to make chocolate. The young fellow told us about the music ...

... I had absolutely no leverage except to start packing to the bus station, where ever that is. He agrees and promises to have a driver there in 10 minutes. Two minutes later a very nice man named Ali rolls I. The parking lot, we pile in our packs, and we're off to Pemuteran. There aren't enough adjectives in the English language to describe the difference of Java and Bali. Trees line ...
