We set off to a nearby coffee plantation to try the famous local luwak coffee. Luwak coffee comes from the luwak animal which eats the pulp from the coffee bean, but doesn't chew the bean. The beans ferment in its stomach for 24 hours before being left as droppings. The droppings are collected, washed and cleaned, and then roasted. It is very expensive – 100g was going for $25! We got to see the animals, coffee trees and beans in ...

... stores (for water, mostly), and no internet other than wi fi in some places (which is why my update was late). Anyways, our bus over to Pemuteran was a public bus, and became packed with chain smoking local fishermen. They were literally running down the steep, rocky path in the darkness. We were already fascinated by them. Once we were down we switched off our lights to fully enjoy the blue flames. We kept a safe distance although we could have walked right up to them. While the sun was rising behind us we sat at the crater lake with Ali ...

... up in the bagus homestay. Really nice rooms and very quiet, also very inexpensive.

Unfortunately the water didn't get any warmer and I skipped the second dive on Saturday - was just too cold. Riza was so nice to keep me company and we explored the area and went to a nice buddhist temple in Gilimanuk.

The drive back to Sanur along the coast was fabulous and I enjoyed the view to the ocean with the rice fields just in front.

Mon 23rd Sep - Today we parted ways with Rick and Tess again, they are off to Java and we plan on staying in Bali for the 2 weeks we have left. We moved to the NW coast of Bali to a place called Pemuteran. Its a small village very close to Bali's national park, Pulau Menjangan island. The national park has a reputation for excellent diving and snorkelling. We caught the local bus from Balian's main road, basically just stood waiting then stuck ...
