It's been a while since we last updated you, and a lot has been going on. We weathered our first Belizean colds - better known as "the flu" here because you can't get a cold in a warm environment, or so we hear - and are now just awaiting the arrival of the dry season where it will be pleasantly in the 70's - we hope - and, well, not rainy. Amy's Update My role over the last month appears to have been to appear on the evening news in audience shots from different programs/openings/conferences...
Belize City, San Ignacio, Caye Caulker, Belize amyandrobThere is something to be said for more spontaneous travel. Wende and I tend to book most of our reservations before we leave the US. While this is good as far as ensuring a place to stay and room to sit on tours, it does have its downside. Other backpackers seem to book their first one or two nights and are then free to travel where the mood strikes. Of course, these people are generally from countries other than the US and they tend to have more holiday time, so perhaps they have even less n...
Caye Caulker/Belize City/San Ignacio, Belize azmarineAs these things happen, today dawned bright and warm and beautiful. The sky was surreally blue, the water was turquoise, the sand was white, and the street was almost bone dry. Almost all of the puddles magically evaporated overnight. And it was the day we were scheduled to leave Caye Caulker for a trek inland, up in the mountains. After stepping outside, we decided to hold off on leaving Caye Caulker for as long as possible, and catch the very last possible ferry where we could still make ou...
San Ignacio, Belize wktsorfToday we went to Actun Tunichil Muknal Cave which was explored by archaeologists in 1985, 93-95 and then opened for tourists in 98. It is full of Mayan artefacts from rituals and sacrifices which they undertook in 'Xibalba' or the underworld (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xibalba). Only two tour companies are allowed to take tourists into the caves and there are rumours that the cave will not be open to tourists for much longer due to ...
San Ignacio, Cayo, Belize sarahelective... I know cuz I seen it on Google Maps. I did a nifty panoramic video sweep from up here. I think my camera must have got vertigo, because there's no sign of it on the camera's memory card. We'll just have to go back... Back down, then, stopping for a family snap at the East Frieze, before heading back down the hill ...
Xunantunich, Belize racinghippo... we reached San Ignacio at around 1.30pm where we got a taxi to the Parrots Nest which was a few miles out of town in the middle of nowhere. We booked it because in the guide book it said you stay in tree houses which sounded like fun.

We checked in and immediately started to wonder why we'd decided to come here - there was noone else around, we were in the middle of nowhere and the 'tree house' was not quite as idylic as it sounded - it just ...
San Ignacio, Belize cat2222... today. Here is a description of what I did. In short, I trekked through the rainforest for an hour, crossed the river 3 times, swam in the cave for almost 2 hours, then rockclimbed for a few metres up the cave wall to get to the dry chamber. This was full of Mayan pottery and skeletons of children and adults who were sacrificed centuries ago. This is the ...

Belmopan, Belize hrpitschmann... into a streetside gutter. (I'm sorry to relate that unfortunate event to others Marieke, I hope you forgive me...it was kinda funny, but only because you weren't hurt). My first day in Belize with Marieke and her friend Natalie was pretty sweet. We grabbed some food and then headed to the Mayan ruins of Cahal Pech, located atop a large hill in San Ignacio. I was expecting some small ruins, maybe a couple buildings...but oh, was I wrong. Cahal Pech (literally- the place of ticks ...
Belmopan, Belize plastrro... Georgeville and along the road to Douglas da Silva, this time though we were in the back of a pick-up en route to the Barton Creek Cave. We had already been advised we could not drive ourselves as the road is too narrow. The tour consists of an hours drive to get there; we passed acres and acres of orange trees as well as lots of strict Mennonite properties. On arrival at the cave it was into canoes complete with the guide and we each had a 12 ...
