Having decided at the last minute to chuck this journal in my suitcase in order to a keep a record of my trip to Nepal (YES!!!), I'll start with things that immediately struck me upon my arrival... Due to illness, I've fallen behind in my journal entries but I'll do my best to remember the last couple of days. On Sunday, Jan. 8, I had no tours with Dinesh (Pity!) so in the morning I decided to go on a walking tour of Southern Thamel as described in Lonely Planet. Nice to not have to wake up so early today. After an omelette at Hotel Marshangydi, I did a little shopping. I went to the Pilgrim's Book Store because they accept credit cards and after perusing a number of coffee table books, I purchased two - one on Mt. Everest and another on Nepal. I then had a pot of masala tea in their teahouse at the back. Kathmandu is crazy!! To drive you need to have arrogance, sided with nerve, and a constant hand on the hooter. No-one waits for anyone and there don't seem to be many pavements which makes things interesting. Thai airways is fab. The food great and could teach Gate Gourmet a thing or two. The airport is reminiscent of Maputo though I think Maputo had more shopping opportunities from what we could see. These last two days have been a little frustrating. Transport hasn't helped and the threat of a strike today with most things running business as usual - except taxi drivers who simply charge more. When asking the locals why there is a strike, the reply is that it has to do with the opposition party but not sure why!!! One guy's response was that they just like to strike! Because of this we had our farewell dinner last night, but both have been having mild stomach rumblings the last few days....

... of Polish/Ukrainian/Russian and apparently E. German cooking. M and G made a type of mashed up placki (pancakes) with powdered sugar and cooked apples. Yum. <br><br>They all drank gin except for me because of the all too recent migraine and the drugs I had to take to kill it. I could still feel it in flashes even after it was seemingly gone. I sometimes worry about these headaches that turn into migraines so quickly. I better not get sick!!!<br>

... with the sister herself then trotted off down the steep pilgrim's stairway to reach the base of the hill where monks and Tibetan pilgrims and dogs were walking around the hill past Tibetan settlements, shrines, prayer wheels, chapels, stone carvings and monasteries. We joined them for awhile until we reached the beautiful Buddha Park where there are three massive statues of the deities. Although the gardens are hectic, the images are very shanti and a nice place to spend some time.<br>
