Having decided at the last minute to chuck this journal in my suitcase in order to a keep a record of my trip to Nepal (YES!!!), I'll start with things that immediately struck me upon my arrival... Kathmandu definitely lies within a valley of majestic wonder. My plane flew into the city as the sun was setting over the Himalayas and as I disembarked the plane, the last light was caressing the peaks. Tres jolie! The airport was small and a far cry from O'Hare or Abu Dhabi, but I didn't really f...
Kathmandu, Nepal dosqueenDue to illness, I've fallen behind in my journal entries but I'll do my best to remember the last couple of days. On Sunday, Jan. 8, I had no tours with Dinesh (Pity!) so in the morning I decided to go on a walking tour of Southern Thamel as described in Lonely Planet. I felt awfully conspicuous on many portions of this walk as the streets were crowded with faces very different from my own. With my 2 cameras in use, I must've looked like Ivana Trump (without the 80's hair, shoulder pads and m...
Kathmandu, Nagarkot, Chitwan and Pokhara, Nepal dosqueenNice to not have to wake up so early today. After an omelette at Hotel Marshangydi, I did a little shopping. I went to the Pilgrim's Book Store because they accept credit cards and after perusing a number of coffee table books, I purchased two - one on Mt. Everest and another on Nepal. I then had a pot of masala tea in their teahouse at the back. Back to the hotel I went as I had arranged to meet Dipak, my Himalayan guide, who had invited me to have a lunch of Dhal Bhat w/his sister at his fl...
Kathmandu, Nepal dosqueenKathmandu is crazy!! To drive you need to have arrogance, sided with nerve, and a constant hand on the hooter. No-one waits for anyone and there don't seem to be many pavements which makes things interesting. Thai airways is fab. The food great and could teach Gate Gourmet a thing or two. The airport is reminiscent of Maputo though I think Maputo had more shopping opportunities from what we could see. The immigration officials were surly which luckily seems to be the antithesis of Nepalis in ...
Kathmandu, Nepal kirstyandmikeThese last two days have been a little frustrating. Transport hasn't helped and the threat of a strike today with most things running business as usual - except taxi drivers who simply charge more. When asking the locals why there is a strike, the reply is that it has to do with the opposition party but not sure why!!! One guy's response was that they just like to strike! Because of this we had our farewell dinner last night, but both have been having mild stomach rumblings the last few days....

... him.
At that point, and without even expecting himself to do this, Angel did something that would change his life and the boys life forever. He asked the old man if could take the boy with him. The man, worried, asked Angel if he would take care of him and make sure he was okay, that he would be good to him. Angel promised he would and the man started crying and said that he must have been sent from heaven.
After he brought the boy ...
... in a bewildered silence. One little guy stayed close to me throughout the day when I took an interest in his sadness and kept checking in on him all day. I saw such hopelessness in his eyes -- the kind of tragedy that only children can imagine. He lay quietly on a mat in the corner, protectively staying close to his 5 month old brother, so I decided to sit with him and tell him that it would all be alright. That poor boy looked so betrayed. He probably thought his mom left ...
Kathmandu, Nepal joannabee... as shelter and living space. One of the guys was up for a chat and made a big performance of lighting and sucking back on a chillum then coughing up smoke which billowed around his face as he laughed, he was quite the character and never asked us for a cent.
We tried to visit the Guhyeshwari temple, the name of which comes from guhya (vagina) and ishwari (goddess), it’s the temple of the goddess vagina and is dedicated to Shakti in her terrible manifestation as ...
... he has made a full recovery I can be as smug as I want.
So the first three days were with Andrew in bed, and when he didn't appear to be getting any better I dragged him out of bed to go and see a doctor. We went to a very good clinic but health comes at a price - $77 for a two minute consultation and some test! Thank goodness for insurance. Anyway I will spare you the details but he had amoebic ...
... Success, Rameesh was at least going to try!
Nate of course stormed off in a huff at 7:30 before Rameesh had even done anything....
Rameesh got on the phone and made some calls for about an hour. At 8:30 we received two thumbs up! Phew, we were headed to Pokhara. We were also booked at a hotel...only 1000 rupees ($12.50) per room. Sweet!
I was so, so, so happy!
Rameesh was really worried that such a change might reflect badly on him, but ...
