Finding Nebo

December 25, 2005: Merry Christmas to all! It is so strange to be away from home in another country on Christmas Day, although it is nice to be so far removed from the utter commercialization of this holy day that has permeated an American Christmas. Today is a holiday in Jordan, as well. But the streets, stores and TV shows are pleasantly void of the pollution that has become associated with Christmas in the states. There are very few signs of Christmas here. But the traditional music piped ...

Uncovered buried citiy of Petra

Pre-trip Itinerary: Petra, Jordan Petra is a city carved in the mountains and set in a canyon that has only one entrance, known as the "Siq," a very narrow passageway, which could be easily defended against attack by an invading army. This morning you enter the "Lost City" of Petra, hidden to the outside world for hundreds of years. A short horseback ride or walk brings you from the main gate to the narrow, twisting canyon of the Siq, which in some places is over 300 feet deep, to enter the N...

... floor, watching the Bedouins herd their camels for the night.

By the time we are finished with Wadi Rum it is already 5 PM and we have a long drive to Petra, arriving at our hotel, the Petra Diamond Hotel, at 7 PM. We knew our previous hotel was too good to continue, as the Petra Diamond Hotel is another one of a long line of hotels used by Imaginative Traveller needing lots of updating and repair. We can hardly move in our room ...

Don't Let School Hinder Education Pt. 2: Petra

I walked from the car to the ticket window to find that ticket prices were steep. 21 JD (about 30 US Dollars). But what was I going to do, turn around and drive the four hours back to Amman without having seen Petra? I coughed up the money and went in, immediately taken aback by the beautiful landscape with homes and facades carved right into it. Petra was a trading town of the Nebetians that popped up right around the time of Jesus' birth. Rather than use the rock ...

No more searching for a non existent seat belt every time i get in a car.

They take tourism very seriously here and as a result they are always trying to give you the best service possible whereas in Egypt they seemed to take tourists more for granted. That's the impression i got anyway. They are also quite ...

... pieces of the Petra puzzle. There were 2 earthquakes in I think Ad 500 and 800 or so and a lot of Petra was destroyed and cracks in the rocks evidence of them. The free standing temples and the main archway entry were toppled. Coming to the bottom of the hill we were at the museum which was small but gave a good overview of the area and how it developed as a main trade centre for the spice and silk route from Asia through to the Middle East as a caravan route ...

Next was a man who told us some local stories and was very entertaining and finally was some more music. The whole night was amazing and it was great to get some of the old world culture. It was a great way to finish our time in Petra and well worth coming to this wonderful place. Next stop the Dead Sea and Madaba.

Jahrhundert voellig aufgeben. Our Indiana Jones Adventure to Petra

The highlight of our stay in Jordan was viewing the ancient city of Petra and climbing the fairly steep mountainous trail up to the Monastery. We even hummed the theme from "Raiders of the Lost Ark" on our climb and entry into the city. It was fantastic!
